Oooh, I'd take a pig too!!

This is the first time we've lived in the country, and when we moved here we had two dogs, and one cat. Got a barn cat on purpose. ONE. barn. cat. Now we have 6. And three dogs, with a fourth one spending the night. An add has been placed on kijiji, and he will be going tomorrow if not claimed.

We have a colony of cats here. The nextdoor neighbor was feeding them at one time. Don't know if he stills. There are probably a dozen of them. They have paths through all our yards. They generally don't go into our fenced backyard but lately they've been lounging on the boat trailer in the side yard with a hovercraft DH was given. There's a big black and white male. Lately I've caught him sitting on the hovercraft! I left for a meeting this evening and saw a little fluffy black cat lounging in the neighbor's bird bath. Yup. In it.
We don't generally get stray dogs out here. Once, years ago there was a golden retriever that wandered into the yard to play with our dog Bear. He stayed for 12 years.... :/
I could use a stray milk goat. But no pigs or roosters please.

Ha ha! you don't know the half of it. Stray dogs are drawn to me like a magnet.

There is a sign over our door that only dogs can read that says "Sucker lives here."

It is on my car, too.

I usually contain strays, call the humane society to see who is looking for them. If no one is, I put an ad in a free local paper and put up a few fliers. If no one claims them, in 30 days, they are my dog. Then I put them up for adoption on petfinder.com. Takes about a month to find a home.

I've done this ALOT.

One of them is one of my five dogs. I got a karelian bear dog that way.

I don't know if I could keep him for a month. He has no manners. i know that if he stayed, that would be taken care of immediatley ( well, in al honesty, he ahs already had some basic manner learnin') Oy, I could just imagine the work we would have to put into this 70 lb pup. He is truly u pup in a full grown dogs body, escept I think he is still growing. The ad is up. Humane society and dog catchers notified. I know once we put some work into him, he will make someone a great dog. And as much as my dd wants to keep him, he would be an outside dog, and our other dogs are too old, with arthritis, they couldn't handle his roughhousing.

Daisy's eyes seem to be ok. We have been only putting in saline eye drops, plus an ointment the vet gave us at night. They haven't gotten as bad as they were when we first found her. I know she's blind-with maybe a bit of sight. She will walk into trees, etc, but if I get something out of the fridge, or drop[ a peice of meat for her to eat she will actually catch it (mind you , it has to be close enough to her, and she has to be expecting it.)
She has to have a great sniffer.

RU has the same problem. People are constantly duping cats, dogs, etc off near her, or asking her to take an animal just for a little while, until they get on their feet again. She's finally had to start saying no. I'm not sure how many cats she has, I've lost count. I think she has 13 dogs, and at least 4 of them were only supposed to be there for a couple of months.

Ya know? I would maybe be a bit more compliant if someone was to say, drop off a goat in milk, or, something along those lines. As much as I love my little ugg pug that I found a month or so ago, I can't have 4 dogs.
First, mtn, I had to laugh at this b/c one of our many, many nicknames for our Pug was "ug mug". :D

Second, stray livestock does happen: a friend of mine got a pet chicken as a kid, b/c one fell off a truck while she was walking home from school...she picked it up & took it home with her (she said she took it everywhere with her); and just a few weeks ago, 5 pigs fell off a truck & tied up traffic on a local highway (the truck kept going so they have no idea who they belonged to)...so, if you happened to be there before "the law" showed up...;) Maybe you just have to keep your eyes open, & you'll get your goat!!

Maybe strays are more common in the country. I have never brought home a stray. When I was young or old. I think my Mother had pretty strict rules on pets. The cost of feeding them ans the vet care was a huge determining factor.

I guess it has kinda rubbed off on me. I am very stingy that way now as well.

Kinda sad.

Deb, I have some suggestions for RU about how to handle that more effectively, the people dumping animals. When you actually speak to the person relinquishing the dog, there are things you should do to prevent problems in the future.

She's not taking any more dogs. She's had enough. However, every so once in awhile, we'll notice a new cat hanging around the barn. It's easier for someone to dump them. :/
