If I'd known this last fall, I might still only own two fat pygmy pets! That is a very generous offer, kstaven. It is encouraging to me that people are willing to take a risk and offer healthy foods to people who are searching. It is pathetic that there has to be a food underground!

Sorry, my comment wasn't complete. While it is illegal to sell raw milk commercially in Oregon there are farms that do sell it "at the door", so to speak, for pets and soap. I've found several sites that list them. Unfortunately, at present the closest are about an hour's drive from me. So, out of reach for all practical purposes. However, I was at our local farmers' market yesterday, and find that the *natural foods* possibilities are growing here in my area, so I have hopes. (A local poultry producer has 500 pasture raised chickens on her land, and they have all been spoken for - good for her, not so good for me :(. But I got on the list for one of her turkeys for Thanksgiving :).)

Well, I just went to check my facts, and find that I was only partially right - about the law, not about the availability in my area.

"Raw goat or sheep milk sales are legal on the farm and in retail stores. No permit is necessary for farmers with no more than nine producing goats and nine producing sheep who sell the milk on the farm directly to the consumer. Raw cow milk sales are illegal except for on-farm sales where the farmer has no more than three producing cows on the premises. The state prohibits advertising for on-farm sales.

Farmers producing raw goat or sheep milk can sell in retail stores if they obtain a producer-distributor license and have their own bottling plant on site. Licensees can sell goat or sheep milk products such as butter, cream, yogurt, and cheese as well. There is one licensed goat milk farmer in the state at the present time."

Since there is a prohibition against advertising, you will have to get in touch with the local grapevine. There may very well be sources closer than you think! I, personally, would be thrilled to take on another goat as a "goat share" with a very responsible person who could take care of the animals when I am away, and help pay some of the expenses. I would happily do all the daily work involved for the peace of mind of having someone who could step in if I have to deal with an emergency, or if I just need to get away for a few days.

But how to find such a person....that is my current project!

Too bad MA is so far from OR - I know absolutely nothing about goats but it would be fun to learn!

Every Friday I make two quarts of Yogurt using powdered milk, my crockpot, a few towels, and a electric heating pad........

I'm going to start some cheese out of Stoneyfield plain yogurt tonight. Then I'll have some whey to put in my sauerkraut.

How long does the whey keep?

Becca, Free said about 10 days to 2 weeks, if I'm not mistaken.

Lets see, right now I've got (at my moms, out of the heat, bleh)
Saurkraut (need to skim this tonight)
Garlic
More pickles (I killed my first batch :hit )
Bean paste!
I soaked some almonds overnight and they went in the dehydrator this morning. We'll see if BBH has good taste :)

And 4 pints of yogurt in the fridge from this weekend! :weee

I poured my plum wine into bottles today to continue fermenting. The bottles are topped with baloons (left over from someones anniversary many years ago, I don't throw anything out :lol:) I also called a Vintners Supply store and inquired about yeast for making plum wine. They promised to call me back with more info.
I figure I'll use this accidental batch of plum wine as my learning experiment. This way I'll be able to gather some of the supplies I will need and experience in home wine making.
