(disgusting non-food crappolla......grumble grumble grumble)

My mead is still bubbling but has experienced a profound clearing. I will rack it off sometime this week and then let it complete a secondary fermentation. Not sure how long to let it go. Hummm....have to see how the little yeasties feel about it :D

I started a quart of yogurt a couple hours ago. However.. I used two cups of cream that I had collected a couple months ago that I had in the freezer, and two cups of cream from some of the older milk jars in the fridge. First time using only cream, so I'm hoping for thick and creamy yogurt!

I've got black, red, and yellow raspberries waiting for it! :drool :love

WZ, :ya for your remarkable show of restraint!

BB, I will be over to have some of that yummy yogurt with berries later tonight....it is a couple hours drive to the VT border for me. Hope you aren't too far north! Wait....maybe you aren't in VT and I will be driving aimlessly, windows open, hoping for a whiff of goat cream yogurt with wild berries....

Nope, maybe your thinking of Ticks over in VT?

You should be able to smell em though! I can't believe how nummy yellow raspberries are, I say that everytime too.

I can't get enough of this book either. It was worth the twenty dollars from B&N, but I had a gift card so that helped.

I just checked CL. Someone has Kefir grains for sale for $8.00 for 1 tbs for pick up only (in my town). So how do you make kefir and do you think that is a fair price.

Well, I am by no means an expert.....haven't actually quite gotten to kefir yet, as I am re-hydrating grains and they are still a bit in shock from the insult....but you put the grains in milk, and let it sit, then strain out the grains and start again with more milk. Just like yogurt, but easier. Room temp, it sits on the counter, and you take the grains out to culture your next batch with. They apparently grow over time, so you end up with more grains to share.

I'd pay the $8 for fresh, live grains. But check around for a kefir-share site, there are often people who got their grains for free who will "pay it forward" to you. I got my kombucha that way. I have since passed it on to many people.

I would offer you some grains but mine are still tiny and I have a short list of people that the first few batches are promised to. If you don't find any, check in with me in.....um.....I have no clue!

Free, Thanks for the input. I will sleep on it.
I am going to make yogurt tonight. I went out a ittle while ago and bought some yogurt at Trader Joe's. They only had low fat or non fat yogurt. But at least they did have organic yogurt with no added crap in it. I wanted organic real yogurt with all the fat. But the full cream yogurt also had pectin and other stuff in it. THa's enough reason for me to make my own. And then add my own fruit. Yumm...
I'm drooling allready.
My wine experiment is doing ok. One bottle filled the baloon with gasses so far. Two still have limp balloons. Hopefully they too will get blown up by tomorrow. I never did hear back from that vintner's supply place. I'll just have to take a drive and see what they have available. And what the prices are on stuff.

That's exciting about the wine! Can't wait to here how it comes out. I wonder if I could drink homemade wine, without the sulfites. Something in wine makes my heart race in a very unpleasant manner, just a sip or two will do it. It's kinda scary. I am guessing it is the sulfites, since I have no problems with grapes.

If your easy experiment is successful, I may just try it. We have wild grapes here. Last year I tried to modify my apple picker to accomodate the grapes, which grow well out of reach in my woods. It didn't work, but I wasn't very motivated at the time, it was just a whim. I'll have to give it another go this year if there is a good wild grape crop...

Oh, that reminds me, I have to go check on the elderberries! I found a big huge patch!

I soaked some almonds overnight and they went in the dehydrator this morning. We'll see if BBH has good taste :)
She does!! ;)
She does!! Having soaked & dried almonds chopped over my morning yogurt, with a smidge of blueberry/blackberry jam spooned in. Nummy num!!

I swear I've seen elderberries in my patch of woods, but I haven't been able to find them again. I did find some wild grapes while trouncing through the woods this weekend. :ya
The vines are super thick, old & reach really high. I wish I was still in my tree climbing days. I'd be 40' up in a heartbeat :D
