The Complete Tightwad Gazette
Quilting For Dummies
The Source of my strength- Charles Stanley

So what are you reading?

By John Ortberg When The Game Is Over, It All Goes Back In The Box, for a 6 week class that starts tonight. It is a wonderful book reminding us only people and God's Kingdom are eternal. Everything else is temporary.

Two books by Marilyn Meberg, Choosing The Amusing. I love this woman, who is a very inspirational (and funny) Women Of Faith conference speaker. This specific book says God presribes a joyful heart as the medicine we need to combat the broken spirits and dry bones that cause us to live our days in quiet dread. She enthusiastically introduces Jesus as the Great Physician, the one who generously dispenses laughter, love, and joy to all who come to him for health and healing. The scripture for this book is Proverbs 17:22 - "A joyful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit dries up the bones."

And also by Marilyn Meberg, Id Rather Be Laughing. This book starts with this verse from Nehemiah 8:10 - Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength. Someone recently mentioned to me that I have not been my smiley-joyful self lately. I thought I needed some good books to get back to normal.

A Nation Of Farmers by Sharon Astyk and Aaron Newton. The SubTitles are: Defeating The Food Crisis On American Soil and How City Farmers, Backyard Chicken Enthusiasts, Victory Gardeners, Small Family Farms, Kids In Edible Schoolyards, Cooks In Their Kitchens, and Passionate Eaters Everywhere Can Overthrow Our Destructive Industrial Agriculture, And Give Us Hope For Life, Liberty, And The Pursuit Of Happiness In A Changing World. This book is on my MUST READ book list and On Mother Earth News' Books For Wiser Living Recommendation List.

Knit Together - Discover Gods Pattern For Your Life by Debbie Macomber. If you are not familiar with Debbie Macombers work, she writes heart-warming stories. I dont read much fiction, but her Christmas stories which included angels, Shirley, Goodness, and Mercy, caught my eye once in an airport while traveling for work. Knit Together is her first non-fiction book. Throughout, Debbie references Psalm 139, which she said combines two of my favorite things - knitting and the understanding of Gods call on my life.

The last book I am reading right now is The Five Love Languages by Dr. Gary Chapman. He is a marriage and family life counselor. The title says it all. We each have different ways of expressing love. He brings flowers; She wanted time to talk. She gives him a hug; He just wants a clean house. What speaks volumes to you may be meaningless to your spouse. The book is very easy to read and easily understood. The last chapters are about love languages in children, and quizzes for men and women to take to discover (if they dont know) their own love language. This book has been around a while, and is very popular recommended reading with our churchs United Methodist Christian Fellowship Couples group. http://www.garychapman.org/products.htm

DrakeMaiden - We read Breakfast At Sally's. What a thought provoking book! I hope you enjoy the read as much as we did. ETA: Maybe "enjoy" isn't the right word here, as the author went from McMansion and large corporate life style to living in his van with his dog and having breakfast at the Salvation Army.

Yeah, keljonma. Some of the books you listed look like ones that I not only would like to read, but NEED to read. :)

How cool is that? That really tells alot about you! Not many people would read up on something for supporting their sister! At least not alot of people I know...they are too busy with their own lives.

:thumbsup

Well, it's actually a bit selfish. They are supposed to be a very isolated family unit right now and we are supposed to not try to bond with him at all. I'm really struggling with that yet trying to respect her wishes, so I'm trying to read what she is reading to see it through her eyes. Plus, we might be facing this ourselves someday...
