What did you do in the garden today?

A cut worm is taking out most of my hot pepper seedlings. With rain every day, there's not much I can put on or around those plants to deter the pest I cannot see. They are planted into black fabric, so it could be anywhere under that stuff, hiding inside the hay.

And I was so proud of those plants!!! First ever success in growing a whole tray of peppers from seed.

Bee, I had something eating my zucchini seedlings and had to replant them. I placed glass jars over them overnight, when the bugs seem to be out more, and they are fine and growing well. That may be an option for you? It's so, so frustrating when you have good seedlings and they get taken out like that!

I'd have to haul a mighty lot of glass jars out to the garden for that method, plus remove them first thing the next morning before the sun baked the plants into mush...we've got temps into 100* here right now, with it reaching high 80s by morning time.

I had 2 doz hot pepper plants...now I'm down to around 6 and 6 sweet pepper plants.

Planted some crookneck squash and a few Cherokee Purple tomatoes (by far, my all time favorite to eat). Picked a few quarts of strawberries to use to make freezer jam. We also got some rain. Everything looks better, and we are expected to have rain all week.

Off work yesterday @6:30 and just said, wow....next 36 hrs are MINE!! It wasn't raining as weatherman had predicted. Shower last night somewhere after midnight, nothing big. Up to sunsine at 6AM -- headed out to fix the fence DS did not get done yesterday. He heard tractor and came out, did the fix! I tilled. I planted !!!!! YES, I have finally got the garden started.

Put the plants from front porch to garden -- 15 tomato, 9 pepper and 5 eggplant. It's a start! Had bought since weather never let me get mine started....will actually start a couple more tomato that I want and they will just be later than these. Also a couple different eggplant -- these are the black beauty which I generally raise anyway. I hoed up 2 rows for bush string beans and planted, as well as 5 hills of zuke and 5 of yellow squash. By that time, sprinkles were beginning. It was 2:30 and I was, quite honestly, ready for a break. With the rains coming, I decided to go ahead and do my feeding then in for shower & cook something. It is raining but just sprinkly stuff.

I sure feel some accomplishment!!! I will be able to add other seeds sometime during the week...have them here. That storm front & another front sitting on us and will determine how much time I will have. But, major portion is done! The prep! And I will have another day off on Sunday. Woohoo! Should be able to get the cardboard and mulching done that day. Will bring the cb home this week from my jobs.

This is such a relief. Since I hope to be close to FT at home next year, my goal was to MAKE myself do as if I were -- as to more production and self support from farm. Obviously the weather being poor and garden late, I was stressing. Like how will I eat this year and thru the winter?? (OK I am ok but it is where I had to put my mindset to know I could quit work -- my practice run, if you will).

I was not able to do a cold crop this Spring but, can do that in Fall. Also will begin my crops for the animals in next 2 wks, as weather permits. Since there is only "self" to rely upon my goal is to show ME just how much I am able to do. Feeling ok today, LOL. Let's see if we get bad weather to screw it up. Farming & aging is NOT for the everyone.

Finally had a chance to get my garden planted. Between the weather, working and having a flood in my basement, I'm way behind. Never got in early stuff, so I may try for a fall crop of some of it.
