Wow, thank you for the kindness, Denise! That's so awesome of you!

This challenge is something I am doing voluntarily for a number of reasons. First, to see if I can do it, of course! Second, I need a new roof on my house (this one is actually falling off), and I need $12000 to do it. I am saving every cent I do not spend to that end. It may take ten years, but I have to start somewhere. And finally, I hope to be an example to the people who are following the challenge that they don't been to be such good consumers! There are ways to live that are every bit as satisfying without money! But I may be preaching to the choir here on that one !

I took an inventory and have a LOT of food stored, and I am using it. But with the challenge, I have to replace what I use before the end of the year. The challenge started Jan 1, and I have spent less than $20 on a few groceries and a few gallons of gas. So far, so good.

Ldychef2k, I think we are on the same wavelength on that. I know that my house (that my DD lives in) needs work. I rather do as much work as I can myself with help of friends if possible and do it to the best of my ability and save as much money as I can, so I can do the best job I can. I sacrifice much, so I do not have to go into debt (any further than I already am). Yet I also am able to farm and live fairly well with what I grow. SO's father helps a lot, but we help him too.
All in all, I do what I can to save money, not spend money and earn as much as I can. I am also always willing to help those who are trying to make things work for themselves in their own way. If I have a surplus, I (and SO) am willing to share it rather than let it go to waste. We have certain friends who have abused this and so we have become more suspicious. But we always give people a chance. And we are always open to barter - whatever feels like a fair exchange-

It goes back to: you harvest what you sow.....Share and share alike and so on....

I gladly start and do the sowing....in any relationship and with anyone....you never know what wonderfull things it may lead up to! :)

I REALLY wanted hair rollers to make my new style faster in the morning. I am trying to make rollers out of some old plastic canvas and ugly wool yarn I couldn't find a use for. I hope it works out! :)

Exactly, Denise! And thank you.

Saved a lot of money today. Our Grocery Outlet had lemon scented and blood orange cented olive oil, a very large bottle, for 97 cents. I found an old lottery ticket in the purse I switched in to and had $8 to spend!!! So, two bottles of olive oil, two boxes of Wheat Thins crackers (again) for a total of 97 cents, and five containers of Oscar Meyer shaved turkey for $1 each (retail $3.50).

Sometimes I get the shaved meat and dehydrate it, blot the oil, crumble, vacuum seal, and then rehydrate to add to scrambled eggs, etc., for camping.

Took a store coupon book with me and bought:
--10/10, 250 count coffee filters, $1/each
--10/10, english muffins, $1/each
--10/10, frozen corn/vegetables, $1/each
--4 pounds naval oranges, $3.99
other stuff
Working on stocking up non-perishables for one year, but I'm staggering my purchases. I've already figured out our needs, now I'm looking for specific prices. Always buying when I don't need to make a special LONG driving trip to get them.

That's a great idea on dehydrating the shaved meat. I'll have to do that. Thanks for sharing. I have just dehydrated some green peppers that I found on sale and some mushrooms.

geez Ldychef2k, I really wish you lived closer to us. We have so much surplus, it makes us sick. We need help farming, but we are always happy to give (or sell at low price) our extra.
We give away a lot of what we grow. We just hate to see anyone go hungry. And if we know that someone tries to make things work for themselves, but is struggling, we are always glad to share what we have. Even if we don't have enough to pay our bills.
I wonder where you live too. I have lots to share, cus I hoard food, and after moving, found that the food pantry is way too overcrowded.

I emptied out my binders from last semester and used some yarn scraps to bind the materials for my records. Now I'm re-using the binders for this semester AND I didn't buy binder clips.

I darned a pair of socks too. My SO was making fun of me because they are cheap old socks. If it saves me from having to buy new socks, I'm OK with that!

I'm sorry, I thought I had answered the question about where I live. Must have switched screens or something.

I live about an hour south of Fresno, a very long way in a long, skinny state !

Don't mean to dissect your post but what the heck kind of roof do you have? I just finished a 3 bedroom house with a walk-in attic (12/12 pitch) for around $1000.
