My Daughter said that her lunch box in worn out. So after thinking for 2 days, I made one. I made it out of Capri Sun pouches. I got the pouches at work that the children were putting in the trash. So all of the project was FREE. I then went on to make some for rewards for the childre at work.
Awesome! Make some more and sell them - they're trendy now.
Thought about that I wont have any time until summer so I have been bring home the containers, and cleaning them. I will be busy this summer

I volunteered to work Monday, and brought home some more free food from work.

Started my garden by adding finished compost to a couple of rows, then I started the big spring barn clean out by taking six loads of compacted poo and bedding and spreading it (spreading is the wrong word....it was so compacted it was more like tiling!) between rows as mulch. Skipping the step of moving it to the compost pile and then having to move it again will save time and my back. Piling it thickly in the pathways of my garden will save weeding. And it will break down by next year and will add to the garden's fertility.

I did this last year in one of my gardens after Big Brown Horse (hi Sally! :frow ) said she did it. It worked out quite well, and there is no sign of any straw or hay in that garden this spring. The hens have scratched it all in.

Oh, and found a home for my pair of pet pygmies so that will be two less mouths to feed, two that aren't contributing. I love them, but they will be going to a great home where they will be loved just as much. :hit

Heading out for after-Easter clearance tomorrow! I'm looking for 1 egg dye kit and plastic eggs. One year I got dozens at $0.10/dozen. Those went into my future-mother-in-law's stash today, so I need some for the neighborhood next year.

Signed up for "cash back" and 'round up the cents' program from my bank. Also investigated ways to get more interest on our emergency funds.

I laid claim to a 4x15 foot rubber mat and 5 gallons of canned veggies destined for the dump. I really like where I work. Great "benefits" ;)

I set up our hand crank mill on a coarse setting and combined 5 grains to use as chick starter.
Just did a little math and it seems I am normally paying about .30 a LB for chick starter @ the feedstore. I pay about .10 a LB for whole grains @ the river, so assuming I can turn whole grains into starter, without any adverse problems, I can get a chick to slaughter/laying point, @ close to 1/3 price.

That is what I do. They will eat the small grains whole by 10-14 days old. Be sure to add crushed granite for them right from the start so they can stock their gizzards. I put some mashed meat/bone scrap from catfood-making on a piece of cardboard for them in the mornings to be sure they get enough protein. Then I toss the cardboard later so it doesn't get smelly. It is always cleaned up! This after observing my broodies feed their chicks on a diet that seemed to be exclusively worms. She would pick up the small bits of coarse grains for them and cluck encouragingly, but they only wanted worms.
