Stayed home. Didn't spend any money on gas to go anywhere. Talked to the farmer neighbor, and was told I could pick up the wheat that was on the ground from where they filled the semis while they were combining. I filled 2 garbage cans, and only got a small part of what was there. Just have to find some other means to store it. If I had to, I am sure I could clean it, and use it for flour. That will help to supplement my chicken feed. I am hoping to do the same thing when they combine the corn later this year. I just need to find a way to crack the corn for the chickens.

Chickens will eat whole corn and do just fine on it as long as you take some time (three weeks for hens that have never eaten any whole grains, less it they get lots of smaller whole grains) so they can develop the crop strength needed to handle it after getting mash or pellets. Birds all have their own built-in grinders. I've had my flock on whole grains for several years now....exclusively. It is healthier for them, too. Most of the time I feed sprouted wheat or barley in the morning (sprouting increases the protein) and whole corn in the afternoon. You could conceivably feed your flock for free this winter! Woohoo!

:thumbsup

We finished up my son's back to school shopping, and I managed to get the most expensive item, his "trendy" looking jeans, about which he is VERY particular (freshman in high school :he), but we got FOUR pairs from the half-off rack! One was a 60 dollar pair, marked down to 20. I NEVER would have spent 60 on them in a million years, so he was darn lucky those pants were only 20! :D

We also managed to get him PE shorts that are actually swim trunks, which are of course marked down to nothing because the summer season is almost over here already. :weee

It was so nice when we FINALLY found the exact pairs he wanted, they were on the half off rack! :love

I stopped at GoodWill today and got a few summer tops for me, mostly for the office, for $2 each and a nice long-sleeved t-shirt for fall for $2.50. I found a very nice sweater for dh for $3....I never find stuff for him! And got a very large men's cotton shirt for the material to sew something for me this winter for $3. I loved the feel and the color and the weight of the fabric. You just can get nice knits at the fabric store.

I also got a stainless steel bowl for the barn cat's water so I can take the bowl from my set back. :p

I didn't get any books because there was a strange, singing man by the books and no one would go near him. :/

Thanks for the info on the whole corn, Freemotion. I am hoping to feed them for free. I got the rest of the wheat hauled home late last night. I would guess that there is at least 1000 lbs. I have another place to go check when I have some daylight. My 3 1/2 hour round trip commute right now does not leave a whole lot of daylight. It is good to be back working for a decent wage though.
