I decided that I do want to try fennel, but not today. I'll buy a bulb next time I'm in the store, but for now, will use familiar and safe veggies. So I used onion, garlic, and carrots, and it is out of the oven, cooling for pulling later. I may make some pasta dough to ferment overnight for this. My mouth is watering for tomorrow!

Good thing we have yummy leftover garden chowder (made with sharp cheddar) for supper and I'm gonna fry up some sweet potato fries later for a "Survivor Finale" snack.....or I'd eat all that pork as I pull it! It smells darn good!

Fennel is wonderful. Fresh in salads or cooked in butter....

It has a nice licorice flavor without being overpowering. It blends wonderfully with all kinds of foods too. Bitters and sweets, both.

It's great with nuts and fruit and cheese salads.

Everyone should try it :D

I grew my first fennel last year and really liked it. I will be growing it again next year. MY favorite thing to do is to pinch off the tips of the plant and the flower buds to snack on in the garden. Very refreshing if you like black licorice, which I do but can no longer eat since it is not Gluten Free.

Ditto! One of the biggest cruelties of being gluten intolerant is NO BLACK LICORICE!!! Just not fair!

Can anyone tell me what it is like? What is the flavor similar to?

My cousin cooked some fennel bulb for me once, with butter & onions and a touch of salt. It smelled so good I cried when I tasted it, because I couldn't handle the licorice flavor. As a hint, in something, I think it would be ok... I'll have to try it, as I like tiny hints of anise in sweet stuff.
Thanfully, she made up for it by introducing me to potato, sausage, bacon, mushroom, onion & kale soup with broth & cream :D
