Seems like there have been a whole lot of rude comments addressed to me in my lifetime....but for the life of me I can't really remember them anymore.

I tend to mull them over for a few days, consider the source, and then just let it go.

I've always taught my kids that mean comments and mean people can only hurt you if you let them. If I continue to internalize their poison barbs, it gives them power over me. Being the independent, stubborn person that I am, I don't like anyone having a hold on me like that.

So...I just let them go. Then these people can't continue to hurt me everytime I remember those hurtful comments....I just choose not to remember them.

If I am having trouble getting it out of my mind, I pray that God will take this feeling from me....never fails to work! :)

Our 8 yo son is also skinny. He is 4 inches taller and atleast 5-10lbs less than his 10 yo brother who is thin but with muscle definition-broad shoulders, small waist. 8yo is straight up and down and looks like a stick person. He is very self conscience about it. Other people look at him, then accusingly at me as if I'm starving the kid. His kindergarten teacher even signed us up for a food basket that year thinking we had no food. If only these people knew the truth!!! He like most kids go thru eating spurts, times when you can't get much into them and times when you can't fill em up. This kid is always a grazer that eats all day long, just some times more than others. And his most spoken words are "I'm hungry, I'm starving or I'm thirsty" I've taken him to the doctor about it. The Dr said he's fine, healthy and growing and if it bothered me I should feed him more fattening foods.

I've got a skinny one too, short and skinny. His classmates sometimes ask him why he's so short. We're trying to impress on him that he's the size he's meant to be. He eats very little. If I didn't remind to come and eat lunch he'd go from breakfast to dinner without so much as asking for a snack.

not to be all scaremongering, but has he been tested for hyperthyroid (probably not given your DRs attitude)? you can get a list of common symptoms if you Google Hyperthyroidism. if it sounds like a possibility, insist that your Dr test him. unfortunately thyroid problems are terribly under-diagnosed in children, especially boys. if they do test him, MAKE SURE they test both T3 AND T4 levels- most doctors ignore T4 and then give a misdiagnosis. luckily, hyperthyroid is typically fairly easy to control, so it's not something to fear. the problems are all in letting it go unchecked.

I've struggled with my weight all of my adult life. Having a mostly sedentary job for twenty years didn't help, but it wasn't the cause. Coming in from one of my few times having to work outside in the south Louisiana summers, I was introduced to a new foreman, who was seated in the break room. His first words to me were, "You don't sweat much for a fat guy".

Generally though, I believe that rudeness toward weight is culture driven. It has gotten a little better in recent years, but generally Hollywood portrays anyone over weight as feeble minded, a jerk, or both. It's especially bad in advertising, which amazes me given the the percentage of American's with weight issues.

Hands down my MIL is the worst. She once told me that I should just give her my children to raise because I was a bad mother since I wasn't teaching my daughter to be submissive to boys and because my son spent the first few days of life in the NICU (not my fault).

That's just one comment. It's most definately the worst...and she always does this when we are the only ones in the room.

Chiming in on the "Boobs" issue...I once went to have my car inspected and the mechanic looked me directly in the boobs the whole conversation. He never once looked me in the face. I am..uh...blessed and a modest dresser. I don't flash them. He was just being a jerk. It really upset me he did it with my 4 yr old (at the time) daughter right there with me ( I know she couldn't possibly understand but that really made me mad).

Ha! I'd totally forgotten the underweight jibes since I haven't had one in about 20 years :D I used to be called an Ethiopian, as I was very, very thin until I hit my 20s. I used to work so hard to gain weight. Go figure.

As for these nonstop boob comments, when some moron can't get his face up to eye level, would it work to literally stoop down to look him in the eye, making obvious the fact that his eyes are not in the right place?

As for kids' weights, I have 2 kids who used to be very, very thin, like 5th percentile for weight. My son has been putting on weight steadily since starting school and is actually headed toward overweight. My daughter is still very, very thin. Eats great, just is nonstop active. Go figure. It annoys me when people comment on their weights, as I don't think kids should be thinking about weight at the ages of 7 or 9. Yikes!

I get a lot of rude comments, but the ones I really dislike are about my pet rats. They are my babies and I feel very blessed to have these warm, loving, intelligent beings in my life. I know they aren't everyone's cup of tea, and I really don't give one of their tails whether you like them or not. I didn't get them for YOU.

Yet people seem to think it's totally ok to make jokes about turning them into snake food, poisoning them, accidentally stepping on them, sticking them in a microwave, introducing their cats to them, and other horrible scenarios like it's the most hilarious joke in the world. Or they bleat out "OH YUCK, you have RATS? That's DISGUSTING. They're filthy vermin, I'd kill those things if they were in my house!"

I normally give them a very icy reply of "Those "Things" happen to be my family, and I'll thank you not to talk about my loved ones that way."

People normally shut right up then. :)
