I like rye bread but don't care for the caraway seeds in actual pumpernickel. That's the only real difference.

If I remember correctly, it was made with maslin originally. That's wheat and rye grown together as one crop. Now we just mix them for it.

pumpernickle bread i grew up with and have eaten most places does not have caraway seeds in it - they sometimes do have other grains in them that are not ground up, but instead sometimes soaked and then used and other times people just put them in and whatever happened was how you got them. rye breads or other breads sometimes had caraway seeds.

I wonder if it's a regional thing. It's always had caraway where I grew up.

I prefer the whole wheat bread with all the nuts and seeds in it. It was a special treat as a kid because it was more expensive. Harder to find now, but there is a brand that carries it here.
