;) I think you're one of the few I've actually spoken to on the phone.
Perhaps :) I may have been impersonating the voice of Mike Rowe to secretly stash myself in the basement though

am i the only one who finds social network sites creepy?
I find them extremely creepy. I don't call some complete stranger or someone who hasn't bothered to look me up for the last 25 years a "friend"...its just weird.

One of my so-called friends begged me to get a FB account so that I could see all the pics of her family....and she has talked to me only a couple of times since I got one.

Its almost like a competition to have more friends....my son asked me why I was ignoring all the friend requests and that it was a "good thing" to have the most friends.

I guess its like collecting Beanie Babies or something....inanimate objects that you call a collection but are largely worthless when you try to "cash them in".

A friend calls to hear your voice, a friend will come to the hospital and hold your hand when you are scared, a friend will come and get you in the middle of the night if you are stranded, a friend visits you and invites you to visit, a friend doesn't try to "reconnect"...if they are really your friend you never have been "disconnected".

I rarely visit my page and, out of all the myriad friend requests, I only have a few select "friends" that were my friends anyway....so what do I need FB for? :hu

Because it's fun - those same friend who will hold your hands in the hospital and all the other things you mentioned are also on FB, sharing photos and stories, it's just another way to connect. I really don't get why people disdain it - it's just a bit of fun, and it is a way for long lost people to reconnect. I've reconnected with people I grew up with, who I really liked, but for whatever life reason we grew apart, now, in our older years, we can reconnect and share long distance. It works for me, I enjoy it. Yes, I can pick up the phone and talk to them, and I do, being on FB doesn't preclude connecting with those same people in real life, too.

And there's the serious side, the way you find out your niece in law is sick, it's shared with the family (most of us are on FB), it's quicker than dozens of phone calls. My boy's family (ohn their father's side) have a page devoted to their family names, and have connected with cousins in Italy they'd never ever have a chance of finding without FB, or using something like ancestory.com, not quite as convenient. Privacy settings can be set so people you don't want to see things won't - yes, there's a learning curve.

It's also a great way to network and connect professionally, or to offer your products for sale. I've sold honey all over the country via FB. Just took my first order tonight for this year's honey. Used well FB is a pretty useful tool.

As for collecting 'friends', I can't see that - although I've 'collected' quite a few. Many are game players, though, and they're on a special list where they really don't see much of my news feed. I've quit playing the games altogether, so some of them have dropped off, that's fine with me. I also have many professional friends in the Pilates world, we use FB to keep track of each others business doings. And then there's my gardening friends, the various societies I belong to and people I've met that way. Do I care how many friends I have on FB? Nah, friends just happen there.

I'll say.....due to some life choices and parental intervention I lost touch with my BFF from high school. Spent almost 20 years looking for her, and we finally reconnected on FB....that being said, I was sorely disappointed with her, as she was with me. We had grown into 2 completely different people, and I think we were better off with our memories instead of the bitterness we have now.

On a good note, I have found friends from elementary/jr. high (one girl I've stayed in snail mail touch with since the 8th grade when we moved, have known her since the 2nd grade) and we've been able to share fun stuff through FB.

I guess it can go both ways. DH laughs at me "You delete more friends than you have" :hu My thing is this, if we've "reconnected" on FB, the lets be connected, not just a number. If I haven't heard from you on my page, then you don't need to be there. I like having people from here on there so we can have another place to swap ideas and to get a better 'feel' of what people are like on a daily basis. :frow

I am not a big friend collecter either, at one point I was, but now limit it to people I have involved in my life NOW and some family. It just got crazy, and I don't realy want everyone in the world knowing all my bussiness

I agree with the above two posts. (53 & 54)

I connect with people all over, and even a bunch of people that live in the same town but I don't see often or call at all... this way I can keep up with whats going on in town, with other peoples kids and my own!

My son is 11 and has a facebook page with his friends, and I friended all of them and have his password etc. as well.

I don't really care if Joe Schmoe from high school never sends me messages or comments on my page, if anything happens back in South Africa - I will hear about it.
A few months back a beautiful chapel burnt down, my sister got married there and I emailed her - she didn't know about it yet, a high school friend of mine posted about it.
I like to know whats going on here and back there... :D
