* OFG peak over WZ's fence trying to see what happened with the duck dressing yesterday *

heeellloooooo.... is there an update here somewhere???
from what I hear her and Abi made a potent team yesterday and it went good :) They helped (haha, helped. aside from half cutting the head off I didn't really do anything  ) me butcher our meaty two nights ago and that went decently well. I think I'm going to modify the hanging from a tree with rope and add tying their wings to their bodies for stability

Is that you hanging from a tree with a rope or the chicken? If it was you, you might as well give up any thoughts of stability - you're off your rocker!

Hip! Hip! Hurray! for Wifey and Abi - the duck slaughtering queens! Somehow I think Abi took perverse pleasure out of spilling blood. :ep

Connor McLoed...because when it comes to drakes, in the end, there can be only one
and this is why i love you baby. whooot!

:-)

great work!!

How'd you know? It was so pretty and smelled so hunger-inducing. I think I ate FIVE TIMES during the duck slaughtering. :gig Half way through cutting one up, I had to break to eat. I think I found my cure for loss of appetite. Well, also it's fall and cool out.

We are still alive...and many ducks aint :gig Abi, the knife sharpening master, was in charge of throat cutting. She had to get past the "gee, the live things don't wanna get their throats slit and the wiggle around all weird" phase. We worked through that by me holding their bills while they were hanging upside down in the cone as she did the deed.
I was able to touch them dead just dandy, though!!! And, by the end, I was able to touch them alive. I don't LIKE living things as much and I've never done well holding birds >.>

I had a revelation and realized I always cope better with an animal alive after I've dealt with it dead. :idunno

I still think I suck at butchering, but I suck at a much faster pace now :D A few more times and I might actually have a clue or two.
*nod nod* By the end we practically didn't suck! Just amateurish. Heh.

We learned a lot! If the bird flips itself upside down, it will live a long time, in a daze from blood loss, but not freaking DIE and then you have to go and slit it AGAIN!

So that was a really good lesson. Also, I'm pretty good at finding the carotid artery. *beams*

Yeah we almost end up with a killer zombie duck. He wiggled out of the cone and flipped himself over. Sheesshh! I made disposable cones. The feedbag cones were a little too wide. The one made out of a vinyl banner worked best. I think I will sew some next time instead of using duct tape. The tape gave out after the 6th duck or so. Then I would have a washable reusable killing cone.

^5 to OFG for getting my geek movie reference. I thought the whole head chopping thing fit in with the name too. :gig

I lectured him on prolonging the pain.

I'm sure that helped.

I am going to tell my D1 about this - (she is at Ren Fest right now) she is going to have a fit! :lau

Zilla what process do you go through on butchering your ducks? Its bear dog to butcher mine...

We took Zeus, our son's cat, to the vet this morning. We thought he had pneumonia or some other type of respiratory issue. Turned out the poor guy had congestive heart failure. We was on borrowed time his whole life. He only had 3 years, but he had a great time despite a rough start as a shelter kitty. A friend of my son adopted him, but then wasn't doing a good job taking care of him. So my son said "HE IS MINE". When son joined the army he came to live with grandma and grandpa.

He played, chased things, and harassed our two old biddy cats for entertainment. He was affectionate and friendly and showed his love by bringing us birds, dragonflies and mice he killed all by himself. He would leave them by our twin recliner so we could see how hard he worked while we slept :sick

We have expected either of the two old biddies to go any time, but this caught us by total surprise. I am a mess over that little pile of fur right now and I am at work. I will try not to cry too much on everyone's printing today.
