FC - It's a full spectrum light bulb. I had SAD really bad last winter, and my doc wanted me to take Prozac, or buy one of those $150 full spectrum lamps. Neither option was really something I wanted to/could do. I happened to be flipping through a gardening supply catalog & saw full-spectrum light bulbs (like those big lamps, but in light bulb form) for something like $5 a piece!!! So I bought a bunch of them, and when I'm starting to feel bad, I put one in my lamp, take the shade off, and enjoy!

The website, if anyone wants some of their own is: http://www.growerssupply.com/farm/supplies/prod1;;pg103995_106147.html. Doesn't look like they're on sale any more, but $13 still beats those expensive light fixtures hands-down!

And the sun is out today!!!! Of course, it's only 20 degrees with wind chills around -5..... :tongue

I use light therapy all winter...and in the summer too when it is cloudy for too long.
This year I have been taking vitamin D along with it...I get really seriuos SAD...have dealt with it all my life and tried everything...but I have to tell you that the vitamin D has made a HUGE difference...I am getting NO symptoms at all this year...NONE! It has changed my life. 1000 mg a day..works wonders for me

We had -13 with windchills of -30 earlier this morning. We are now at -5 with -30 windchills. :barnie We're also suppose to get 1-2 inches more of snow today but, I thought it was to cold to snow. :idunno

I have the full spectrum lights in my kitchen light that are suppose to help with SAD. I have really noticed an improvement this year.

I think I will get a couple of those full spectrum bulbs- sun light is in short stupply all year around here. Thanks for the link.

I do the vitamin d thing too- and it makes a real difference in my attitude- I definitely feel more energetic.

Last night I went to sleep with temps dropping from yesterdays 35 and white fields and today woke up with temp of 45 and NO snow anywhere to be seen- weird. But not unwlecome- can clean up all those snow hidden piles of horse droppings.

Excuse my ignorance, but what is SAD?
seasonal affective disorder. aka lack of sunlight crazies:>)
My ex was a very depressed human, and he definitely suffered from SAD - and so did the rest of us because of him! The days would start shortening and he'd go into his even worst funk, by the time the holidays were here it was just plain brutal to be near him. Then the sun would start to get higher in the sky and he'd snap out of it. A bit. He lives in Florida now and maybe he's a bit happier - although I doubt it. Good riddance!

We've had about six inches of 'flurries' today that were supposed to be rain - and it's going to freeze tonight. Hubby and YS has been out there shoveling like crazy, they had to do the roof, too, cuz I noticed an ice dam forming on the back of the house, bad news, I've already had damage up there from one, don't want more! I used to have heat trace in that gutter but it got ruined when the tree fell on the house a few years ago and I never replaced it - I'll be replacing it tout suit now, I don't want to go through having the two of them up on the roof again, my stomach was in knots worrying about them falling off! :ep

full spectrum lights...thanks curly
I didn't know. I heard about the SAD but didn't know a specific light was for that.

lucky I do have sun very regular here in NC...that is part of its charm. I don't know if I have SAD but if I have 3-4 days with a storm, I start to go insane...imagine if I lived where sun was less. Don't want to know what I might do..HA HA

interesting.

I do vitamin D also and I feel it has helped. I notice a lighter feeling in attitude after I started. I need all the help I can get..LOL

Farmer kitty, I really feel for ya. We had -18 this weekend. Thank god no wind really. The woodstove was going so hot that we had a woodstove house fire last night. Now it is getting windy, is it windy there too?

Yes, it's windy here. The windchills haven't let up any and aren't suppose to until mid day tomorrow.

I hope everything is fine after the fire. Am I correct in understanding that it's one of those outside woodstoves?

It's real nasty taking care of animals in this. Where is the global warming? It has deserted us, who has it. Send it back, please!
