Think of your resume and cover as something you prepare ahead of time so that you don't have to think on your feet so fast. You have the time to craft it just the way you want. Then hopefully they will already have a lot of your "answers" answered when you are actually presented to meet them. At that point you just smile quietly and say, yes, that is me.

Ladies, I can't be of much help tonight. Long day, unexpected challenges this evening, it'll be okay in a day or two. :)

Abi - try to put yourself in the role of the hiring manager. What on these pieces of paper place Abi at the top of the list? With the economy, companies can afford to be choosy. The resume gets you the phone or face-to-face interview, from there it's all you! :D

I hate interviewing, I really do.

My goal is to get the cover letter out tomorrow. I'm not actually any closer. I'll probably just print out EXACTLY what SD gave me and forget to remove "important person" and put in real names.

Abi - (if you want) copy and paste what you have into a PM and send it to me, I'm about to sit down and watch "Despicable Me" with the youngest two right now. I'll be back on about 9pm ET.

Abi, that one was a little bit tongue-in-cheek, it probably needs a little polishing. :hide I'd be happy to proofread too.

I cried and my brother in law took pity on me. I'll fill in the top part specific to the place. Like Jamie said.

Dear official name:

Given my related experience and excellent capabilities I believe I would be an ideal match for this position and would like to tell you a little about myself.

Although I have just finished my C.N.A. course, I had previously fallen in love with this field. I enjoyed working at Craig Hospital which rehabilitated spinal cord and head injuries. I found the patients fascinating to talk to and rewarding to work with. During my clinicals in long term care for the elderly, I felt terrible that these people, who have a wealth of life experience, were often marginalized and treated as if they were no longer relevant. It felt wonderful to be able to greatly increase their quality of life simply by spending a short time with them, by giving them a friendly face that cared about them.

As someone who holds honesty as an important trait, I feel the hospital is a good fit as proper healthcare requires both integrity and attention to details. People's lives are on the line when they are being treated, so it is important that things be done properly. This sort of environment is one in which I feel at home and can make a real contribution.

At my current job, I have the good fortune of being able to work independently, but at the same time within a team, in which I enjoy the camaraderie and positive relationships with my co-workers. Because of my rapport with the group, I am often called upon to train new people or troubleshoot problems. Sadly, opportunity for advancement is very limited and is seasonally uncertain. Moreover, while it is a job, it is not a vocation.

I appreciate your taking the time to review my credentials and experience. Thank you in advance for your consideration of my attached resume.
eta I have a list of 7 places at which to apply. and 2 more.... I'm relaxing tonight. Tomorrow we're doing a final run through of skills for CNA and then dance class and then I'll spend the afternoon filling out applications and earning ice cream....
