Wow, sounds like an interesting day yesterday. I sure hope someone claims that dog. It sounds like it would make your life a little easier. Sorry to hear about Buford . At least you're never bored
Not much going on - had another bout of chick excitement yesterday. Found a pipped egg, the little chick had made about a dime sized hole but it was now full of ants. I took it and cleaned them out the best I could, chipping away some at the shelt until I got the ants out. I put the egg under my broody Buff Orp and went to work. When I came back 4hrs later, the egg was rolled out in the middle of the chicken house, cold as if it were in the fridge and the chick taking agonal gasps of air. I took it inside, cleared out ants again, peeled away a little more shell and then it started bleeding. I wrapped it loosely in paper towels, covered it with a wet paper towel, set it pretty close to a red heat lamp and zipped away to work again. When I went home again (4 hours later) there was definite progress, teh chick was almost out of the egg - and finally when I got home from work "for real" I have what I think must be officially the cutest chick ever - and the toughest!! (and it has the Easter Egger beard and Brahma feathered legs!!)
Pullet or Roo, this little one has a home here! Forgive the blurry cell phone pics
Cuteness!!
I took Rio to the ortho vet today... my vet's estimate was way off, but I have the money set aside so we are moving forward. He will have his surgery on June 7. My vet will provide a lot of the stuff much cheaper (somethings even free) so that will help with the total costs. I paid off a loan and 2 credit cards today and put some money in savings, so hopefully this will work out ok.
It is VERY unseasonably cool here and I love it! Last night it was in the 40's, today it is 71* - our normals are lows around 71 and highs around 87!~ Woot!!!
The garden seems to be doing better without me tending it LOL. I have several tomatoes ripening and some more corn stalks coming up. I picked the last 5 peaches today - a squirrel or rat has been knocking them out of the tree and snacking on them.
So that was YOU?!?!
Yesterday I got a call from a woman claiming the dog I found. A lot of the details worked out right and so I did stupid thing #1 - I gave her directions to my house to see the dog (and yes, I even know about the craigslist murders!!). She said she would call me when she was on her way, so I did a few things in the house and then went outside to feed / tend the chickens. All of the windows were open so as I walked back to the house I heard voices and thought they must be coming through the front yard. OH... NAY NAY... THE WOMAN WAS STANDING IN MY LIVING ROOM!!!!
Here is stupidity #2.... I allowed myself to get so caught off guard I didn't curse her out, throw her out or any of the 100 other things I should have done. I said something about "well hello, come on in" sarcastically.... and that was it. I have been so *%(#@ at myself ever since. Well more details on the dog / circumstances matched than the ones that didnt' and I was glad to have somebody come get her. She seemed happy enough to go with them (but she's a Lab so not sure that counts).
I was so worked up and furious with myself last night I had to take 2 doses of prescription sleep meds. I have finally settled down some and am trying to look at it from a more calm "lessons learned" perpspective.
But I'm still *$@!^
My tough chick is still hanging in there.... wondered about his motor skills last night but he seems to be getting around and eating / drinking ok.
Mr Old Neighbor said a guy up the street lost his whole garden... took some soils samples and the extension office said he has a disease in the ground and has to dig up a 16 inch deep layer and burn it. Mr. ON said he is having trouble with his garden as far as much coming up, and his watermelons haven't even blossomed. My peas are nowhere to be found (I am going to throw out some more seed and try that).
yeah she went on and on about how fortunate that I found the dog, etc etc .... evidently this is the 2nd time the dog has gotten away, the first time they had to get her at the county animal control and pay fines. I suggested she get the dog microchipped since this is evidently a problem and she said "oh we don't go to a vet, we just buy meds online it's so much cheaper"
I wanted to yank that leash away and send the woman on her way. *sigh*
I am happy/sad that you found the owner of that dog. I would have been ticked to find her standing in my living room, of course my dog would never have let that happen He is 75lbs of possesive. No one he doesn't know walks into our house unless we are there to invite them.
Unfortunately I had my dog with me. My parents dog would have attacked, but they had him shut up on their backporch expecting Fed Ex.
I still just can't believe she would do that. Idiot. ( a friend of mine said "yeah what if she had walked in to find you with a shotgun?" I said "even worse, what if she had walked in to find me getting out of the shower - some things are scarier than buckshot" )
