I almost made a fool out of myself at work.... it RAINED!! It was all I could do to not whoop and holler! I sure hope it rained at my house. It was only .32 inches according to the weather guy, but it was such a novel experience to have them not say "trace" for the measurement!
W/as dry as you've been, I would have probably not only whooped and holler, but gone out in it and started to dance!

If it hadn't been a mini-hurricane out there I would have danced for real today!!!
It rained again!! Boy did it rain! Winds of 60mph, hail, sheets of rain and the brightest, whitest, sharpest lightning!! The storm probably crushed my poor garden but at this point that pitiful plot of ground is secondary to pasture grass!

Tomorrow we will pay the piper for the rain though - heat index is expected to be 108*. I think I will bring the rabbits inside. I haven't gotten around to buying fans for them and I just don't know if blowing hot air around would be enough. Skye, my old mare, suffers in the heat but so far her heaves are not kicking in too bad. I can usually shower her a couple of times with the garden hose and she does ok, but I need to get her set up with a cool place to go as well because it looks like summer is going to kick our behinds this year.

Reading Shiloh's journal I realized I have to get going on the hunt for hay around here. I will probably have my surgery (weight loss) in early August and I won't be able to toss hay bales for a couple of months most likely. I need to stock up on feed for the animals and litter for the rabbits.
Yikes.... I need to make a list!

Did I mention it rained?!?!? :weee

:weee Hooray for rain!!!! :weee

I'm curious, what do you give Skye for her heaves, and what do you feed her? Right now, it's so dry in my pasture that I can see Stormy struggling to breathe at times, plus he will occasionally cough. While his weight isn't too terribly bad, he could stand to put on at least 50 lbs.

As far as the rabbits, I had the same fear -- that blowing hot air around wouldn't be enough. In fact, the misters got turned off yesterday (maybe visiting kids being helpful and thinking I'd not turned the hose quite all the way off?) and it was several hours before I discovered it. My buck was pretty distressed. :( I think he's ok now. Fortunately I had the kits inside, lined up in boxes in the bathtub so the cats can't "visit" them.

My llama is the same as your horse. She lets me spray her down a few times a day, and is usually lying in shade on wet ground near the trough or goose pool during the hottest part of the day.

I'm thinking of running some light tubing along the shady part of the pasture fence with pinholes pricked in it to provide mist in the pasture. It really seems to make a difference. I should check actual temps again today.

Yayyyy for the rain though!!!

I have been stomping around in the ... well, not really wet enough to be mud... wet dirt? And grinning like a crazy person. It amazes me that less than an inch of rain (over 2 days total) can make brown crunchy grass green. It is really thin and pitiful, but it is there.

Deb - I was feeding Skye Triumph Senior, but it doesn't have enough fat in it and she is dropping weight like crazy. I put her back on Purina Equine Senior and hope it will put some weight on her. I actually keep her thin in summer to lessen the effects of the heat and humidity some - but not this thin! I give dexamethasone every other day starting in late spring through late fall. Last year I had to also give oral "Ventipulmin" (sp?) because she was in very bad shape - yellow snot, choking. It was insanely expensive but I managed to get 4 bottles on a "BOGO" free. I have the vet coming out on Friday to do their vaccines and Coggins tests, so she will get her physical and dental check as well.
I hope Buddy behaves lol.

It was a great storm, I would have loved to have been home and sitting out in the barn under the tin roof listening to the rain! My tomato plants are blown over / down, we lost a decent sized little branch off the pear tree and about 40 loose pears, and the inside of my chicken house got soaked because "somebody" ( :D ) didn't close the door and latch it. We were more than 16 inches behind on rainfall last I heard and I doubt this .75 of an inch will do much, but it sure made it seem like our corner of the world finally exhaled.

I have a good stock of frozen water bottles so I am just constantly rotating them. With the 2 little dwarf rabbits that are together I give them 2 bottles in the morning, 1 around 11 and then replace all 3 with a fresh 2 at about 3. The big lone rabbit gets one at a time and does ok because he is in a total wire cage (with a big board to get on if he wants), but the dwarfs are in one of those "starter cages" with a tray bottom, so not as much air circulation.

Last year I ran a soaker hose through the low branches of a pecan tree and turned it on low... Skye didn't stand under it enough to make it worthwhile, but I liked it.

I put some water in the 300gal stock tank and Rio and Rags have been playing and wrestling like teenage boys (no offense Buff! ;) ). Originally our high was 98* with a heat index of 108, but now they are saying 95 with an index of 104. So much better lol

My friend who did the meat chickens with me is coming over in just a little while to dispatch some of my roosters. I have 5 young roos, Poppy (my big white easter egger bald butted flock rooster), 2 chicks I feel very sure are roos, and she is bringing a roo over (that she got from me!). No more Poppy offspring here, he just throws roosters!!! ;)
I try really hard to do the SS stuff, but these are incubator chicks that I raised so I will not even help after the deed is done. I told them they are totally on their own. They are going to process 3 of the 6 incubator roos today . I am keeping Red, the biggest prettiest and first hatched. I am giving Mr. ON the pretty coppery gold roo. I have no idea what I am going to do with the roo she is bringing - I should let them butcher it too, but it is so cool looking - a Barred Rock with a striped beard.

I'm such a sap.

I had a great sleep last night finally... woke up too early but I was well rested so got on up and started on chores. Yesterday I took my little Tuffy chick (the solo chick that survived 2 bouts of ants, cold and bleeding - before even hatching completely!) outside and put it in the big wire kennel. After a bit it seemed perfectly content in the grass. Last night I caught the cochin pullets (just 2 months old maybe? Have to look them up) and put them in the kennel with Tuff. They got along fine. This morning I turned them all out in the backyard with the big flock. Tuff mostly hangs back, but seems to at least follow in the general direction of the flock, and for the most part they are ignoring the poor chick. We have some big clouds coming
( http://www.northescambia.com/?p=58226 awesome, huh?) so I need to go make sure everybody found their way back to the chicken house.

I picked another dozen or so tomatoes - slicing a couple of them for grilled hamburgers for lunch.

Have the vet coming out tomorrow to tend the horses. I figure to send Buddy to the trainer for 4 weeks around the first of August while I am recuperating from my surgery. Have to stock up on feed and get someone to pick up eggs for me (or raise the nest boxes...hmm).

By all means enjoy eating some of those extra roos, but don't blame your rooster for throwing all boys. In chickens it is the HEN :ep that is responsible for the sex of the chicks!
