The excitement has already begun. The BF - Mr. Minnesota man ;) - has been called to work out on the Gulf. Personally, I think he is holed up in a warm hotel room somewhere laughing hysterically. So, Friend says she can do the hatchet work. My dad will probably show up at some point to make fun of us and we already plan to put him to work :p . Friend's 15yr old son may bring a friend. My nephew was told by a family friend that if he helps butcher chickens he will never want to eat another one so he "offered" to watch the little girl if she freaks out. Bunch of traitors ;)

We have already decided we will take a couple of the biggest ones first and try plucking them, and then depending on how that goes we may skin the rest of them.

I was at my folks house tonight before work and they both (at seperate times in different rooms of the house) started in on me about "pooooor little chickens". They do it because they know I am a softie and they actually hope to upset me / make me feel guilty. Instead it really really ticked me off. Normally I don't say anything, I just walk away. Tonight I said "I know you are hoping that you have upset me or made me feel guilty, but I want to assure you that I am quite looking forward to the chance to kill and gut these particular little chickens. Sorry to disappoint you".... and THEN I walked away.

My family. *sigh*

YIkes.... I am going to need cheerleaders today.

Maybe once we get started I'll do ok... but right now I am regretting getting myself into this. I am empathetic to a fault and even though I really (really) don't like these chickens, I keep thinking how hungry they must be and how they aren't going to understand why I don't feed them this morning. I dread friend wielding the hatchet because of horror stories I have read about failed attempts.

blah.... ready for this day to be done with already.

I hear you on the family. I have 2 that I'm going to need to do, and I don't have a clue how! I was talking to my son, hoping he'd know someone who knows how. And he says, can't you just find a new home for them? They're an unusual color. Maybe someone would like them for pets. They're not an unusual color, they're an EE, RB cross and look like a RB.

I have a horror story but I will spare you. You can do it Deb, its simple.

AL- Think of it this way. These birds are suffering because of their weight and etc. And your doing them a favor by killing them.

ps i love that you've been up since 5:27 in the AM fretting over this

pss the folks who say that havent done their own chicken dressing before - how can their critique?

and

any psychological trama that meat may encounter will be over in a second. mostly they think "geez? why am i hanging upside down? whats that"

then is over.

and really - you'll be so caught up in the process you wont have time to reconsider. who was it who said "under those feathers there's a chicken!?!?"

just keep thinking about that

you'll do great. really

It is really kinda cool AL! We went at it with a science/learning/farm geek frame of mind and that made it easier. And if you swish in warm water just right, the feathers should peel off like a rug :p I thought it was the best part, 'cause I'm not that good at the cutting up.
