Almost Self-Reliant
It has taken me 30 years to get my soil to the point of being able to grow things!
I have to do raised beds, or pots, or somehow make areas that the native soil
can't "invade" the beds. A few years ago I started to use Miracle Grow Moisture
Control Potting soil, it has "Coir" a coconut fiber that holds water better than
anything I have ever tried!
During the summer, I used shade cloth over my tomato plants or anything
else that I want to survive our hot weather. Thankfully I have two huge
Pine trees that shade my chicken coop and the back yard for most of
the afternoon. Otherwise, I bet I'd have dead chickens and plants.
