It has taken me 30 years to get my soil to the point of being able to grow things!

I have to do raised beds, or pots, or somehow make areas that the native soil
can't "invade" the beds. A few years ago I started to use Miracle Grow Moisture
Control Potting soil, it has "Coir" a coconut fiber that holds water better than
anything I have ever tried!

During the summer, I used shade cloth over my tomato plants or anything
else that I want to survive our hot weather. Thankfully I have two huge
Pine trees that shade my chicken coop and the back yard for most of
the afternoon. Otherwise, I bet I'd have dead chickens and plants.

I thought I would share with you the raised beds my son built in Surprise AZ.

He did a good job, I think.

He made the shade structures so they were adjustable for the needs of different plants.

Well we got our garden area fenced in, we have added 3 alpine dairy goats to our homestead, they were born in march so it will be next year before we can breed them. We still need to find a buck tho, The person sold us all 3 for 50.00 dollars but one is a wether, we decided to keep him for company to a buck when we get one. Also got our wind generator up, it is 450 watt so it helps out with the 480 watts of solar panels. I have posted more pictures on our blog. http://www.homesteading-arizona.blogspot.com

We now have 16 chickens and 5 royal palm turkeys.

Been getting some rain here from the monsoon season so far, it really helps cool things down.
