we used wood chips raising our girls, but more because it was convenient than because of 'the rules" though i will admit getting the shavings in the water and food was annoying lol.

but we didnt medicate, we purposly chose unmedicated feed, didnt use a red buld either, just a regulsr bulb, we did it all with what we had handy...and other than a little pecking this winter, there all veyr fat healthy heavy laying hens :)

ill have to look into hay when its my turn to be raising new chicks.

So why "can't" you use straw? And what's with the red light? I never really understood that either! Well if those r the rules I'm def in trouble!!

the red light is supposed to keep them from picking, or at least if they are picking on each other they won't notice if they draw blood. if they draw blood and see it, they will try to peck to death. plus, it's a good heat source :)

the straw, it's because it's less absorbent (I think?) and because its less comfortable? I dunno. We use wood chips, but we also take the used out and just toss it on the "compost pile" and let them spread it out for us :D it creates places out there for the bugs to winter in, and the girls loved that area all winter long! :)

Oh well that makes sense then I guess. We've also been using chips but I was just curious. I read somewhere that cedar chips are bad so I was just curious if there was also something with straw.

Cool, I have 13 chicks left. I sold 2 for $10 last Friday, and 6 for $12 today. I also sold an extra feeder and waterer to the girl that bought the 6. Got back what I paid for them :D
