Mine have done well but I have only had them a year so this is my second winter with them and I don't really know how old they are since I bought them "used"

Mine just got out of a horrendous molt and haven't started laying again but they usually do one a day or 5-6 a week. Big pretty brown eggs that rival my duck eggs in size. I can always tell them apart from my sex links eggs....they are pinkier and smaller, still big but smaller than the brahmas. I would love to get some more, we'll see how my new girls lay (should start this month) and then we'll see what happens in the spring.

here she is with "her" babies when they got older....she never could figure out why they always wanted to be in the water bowl....silly "chickens"

I am going to have to get Brahmas. The way these winters have been I need a good cold hardy layer. I wonder if Muscovies would hatch chicks out?

For motherly hens, definenetely brahmas!! I have bantams and reg. Size and they're the best. Bantee went broody on someones egg, for 2 weeks she sat on it even in the AM when it was frozen.

For dual, black langshans. My roo looks tasty, but my hen hasn't started laying yet :/

Tommorow Im gonna scope out who all I plan to cull. Im gonna replace with Brahmas and Partridge Rocks. I'd like to replace most of them with more SS type birds. But I guess its a gradual thing.

Sounds like you are having a great day! I'm getting ready to go up and check on my gals and hope they all did ok through the night... They were doing ok last night when it was down to 15 already... it eventually dropped down to 12... it's still only 15 now... :/ We have what looks like an inch of snow on the ground but it's actually ice...

Lori, that is just stinkin' cute! My Brahmas were defective :( 2 died from getting egg bound and one is still around but not really laying much. She tried to go broody last year but it wasn't a good time for us. I'm going to give her another chance in spring, maybe buy a couple chicks at the feed store and see if I can coax her into brooding them for me. I would love a couple of buff Brahmas, they are so pretty in spite of how much they eat.

I ve just spent an hour, getting two Australorps in the chicken coop. Im so mad. The dog didnt help he just stood in his kennel and barked. I saw two chickens in the house shivering (its about 8 or 9 out). But they are all in now. Im gonna get Light Brahmas. I dont really like the buff ones and the dark ones are more expensive. After the past few winters I think Brahmas would thrive here.
