From "The New Self-Sufficient Gardener" by John Seymour, page 237.

Quote:
Killing a Rabbit
To kill a rabbit, catch the hind legs in your left hand, put your right hand over the back of its neck, and pull suddenly, bending the head up and back as you do. Death is absolutely painless and instantaneous

Then cut the head off and hang from rear legs to drain out the blood.

Let me work on the description of how the hands are placed.

The left hand is holding the hind legs up at the level of the left armpit. Bottom side of the wrist is facing your face. The fingers are wrapped around the the "thigh" part of the leg.

The right hand is held down near the waist, with the pointer finger on the side of the neck closest to your body and the middle finger is on the "outside" of the neck. The palm of the right hand appears to be resting at the base of the ears.

It might take a few "dry runs" to get the grip right.

Do the directions make sense?

Oh yeah, the rabbit's back is obviously facing "up"

Yes they do! Thanks! I got my book out and it says what you just said. Gran already backed out with rabbits she said it'd have to be all me.

I've tried several ways... "broomsticking" where you lay a stick across the neck and step on the sides of it and pull the back legs hard to snap the neck... works ok on young rabbits...

next I've hit them with a hammer (I actually held a very large bolt (about 6inches long and thick) and hit the bolt with the hammer... that way I could hold the rabbit down with one hand and make sure the bolt was right in the exact spot so I didn't miss... that works well...

but my favorite is with a pellet gun... here is a video on youtube and this way works best for me...

hope this helps :)

Yeah I watched that video before. I guess I may just hold them then wack the heck out of their neck then cut its head off.

You're quite welcome. I was getting a little nervous about the gunplay. Not that I'm afraid of guns, I was worried about you trying it alone and doubting the bun would cooperate. (My hunting buddies, way back when I hunted, called me "MR SAFETY).

Now, we can get down to business. How do you plan to cook up the tasty beast?

FRY IT!! No other way for me, maybe stew. But frying is something I can do sucessfully so I guess thats what I will do. Im gonna aim for the first of March to do the two buns I have right now. Im gonna keep the little brown rabbit and sell it around easter. He is to pretty to eat, very beautiful.

here is the broomstick method (similar to the pull method but a tad easier) you free up your left hand to help you pull by using the stick to hold the rabbit's neck down... because you do have to pull HARD (well hard for me but I'm a weenie) and it's best for me to have the strength of 2 hands instead of just the one

as for recipes anything with chicken works as a great recipe for rabbit as well!!! :drool
