It is a strange feeling when all your birds are gone all of a sudden. Ours were attacked and killed a few years ago. We couldn't stand the lack of clucking and not having them around. I ended up buying a few fully grown hens, just to tide us over 'til spring.
Hope your 'coon problems are over. But we always keep our trap baited and set. Just in case. And having a good dog helps too. Don't forget to give the dog a pat on the head.

Tomorrow I should get some Pekin eggs to try hatching. Also, Friday I did a Cackle Hatchery order sort of on a whim. Found some Gold-laced Wyandottes that I'd like for a breeding set. I had 2 hens that I love. So I ordered 6 straight run and also added on 2 BA cocks for breeders, some Partridge Rock, and some Blue Splash LF Cochin for brooders. hide So, Saturday I get this call on my answering machine that the order I placed Friday and marked to have shipped ASAP could go out MONDAY! Talk about service! celebrate
10 Pekin eggs along with 3 Red Stars the seller wanted me to test are now incubating.

I picked up chicks this morning, but they only sent 7 of the 21 -- no GLW or PR. :hit I'm a bit confused by the wording on the invoice if those will ship later or if I need to reorder.

All I want to know is what in the world do you do with all those birds??? Such a variety!!
I love variety, but space is definitely a premium around my place. I'll certainly need to do some downsizing after the chicks are at least half grown. I'm already thinking a trip to the Rogers auction is in my future. I'll definitely have to downsize before winter.

I have a main coop for my egg layers that is holding 15 layers, 1 roo, and 5 half-grown chicks my broody raised. Then there is the secondary coop that has 3 pens. One pen holds my BR turkey trio, 1 has 2 teenage turkeys with 4 Wyandotte hens, and the little pen (the one without a run) is now holding BA chicks with one RP turkey that is their size. I have a small coop that shares a roof with the dog house, holding 6 production hens that are almost grown. I want to integrate them into the laying flock. The main coop can hold up to 25, but I want to get rid of some old layers and mutt chicks.

I have 2 brooder boxes, then I have that little A-frame tractor coop pictured on here in early pages that holds chicks after they feather out. I'm thinking about ideas for other tractor coops. :)

No more sign of coons, though I've kept the trap set.

Two nights, though, I've heard a strange animal noise after midnight. It made me think canine with it long, rather pathetic, bawwwl oow sound, but I know it isn't coyote. Maybe fox, but a neighbor told me there is a bobcat in the area. The sound is rather too close for comfort, whatever it is. :hide

Yesterday, I made yogurt cheese and started a tonic drink recipe I found in the Nourishing Traditions book that uses beets and whey. Supposed to help digestion, which I'd appreciate. We'll see how it tastes after 2 days. Got some beautiful beets from my weedy garden.

Ha, yeah. I didn't plan on those. Not my choice of variety. But our friend's husband was absolutely against having those at their house. They are pathetically ugly black naked necks. Guess I'll brood them until we are sure they are a boy/girl pair as it is appearing. They'll probably end up at auction where Aly and I'll split the earnings. :)

Yay for new chicks! Hope you get the rest of your order.
You and Aly have this chicken-go-round thing going on and it's making me dizzy  I understand the addiction though. If I had more space and a clone of my husband, there would be chickens everywhere.

Just found out my aunt died (my daddy's oldest sister). She was aging, but her passing was sudden. Checking out flights to Kansas, but not sure a trip would be reasonable considering all I have going on right now. :hit

Sorry to hear about your aunt darlin'. Glad you're having good luck with the chickens, though. :)

Seriously looking into flights to Kansas for this funeral so I can see lots of my cousins. It isn't the best time to be gone from the job, though. I feel like I'm neglecting my work. :(

Had turkey egg shaking and heard peeps this morning but didn't see a pip. Washed the hatching incubator and put the turkey and peafowl in it, but the humidity is way up because the incubator wasn't fully dry. :/

Going to have to cull a BBS Orp chick. It had a raw spot on its back since hatching and now it seems like it is paralyzed on one side of its body. A friend told me to put it in a baggy in the freezer and let it go to sleep. :hit

Caught a possum in the trap. It got in the garage and ate lots of cat food overnight.
