Lou was so used to being in the house (every 6 months), that she learned to scratch on the slider door to go outside and do her broody poo!
Wow, who knew you could house train a chicken!?!

A friend got ahold of several pheasant eggs. I told him we could put some under my broody. :D

Still not feeling great. Probably would help if I could slow down a bit. :/

Picked more beans last night.

Took 8 chicks out of the brooder--since 30 was getting to be too many--and set them up in a dog crate.

I hope you start feeling better :)

I loved the pictures...what a wonderful place! The coop and the pantry are awesome. I love those old brick buildings, they just have so much character....you just wish the walls could talk and tell you stories form the past.

I think my cold is finally going away.

And VBS is over today. YAH! I'm not a teacher type. :(

I enjoyed skipping VBS last night to meet Keljonma and her husband. We had a nice evening at QA's place. I loved seeing Kel's beautiful flock of birds.

I ended up taking a duck home from QA. She is a Khaki Campbell that didn't have a mate. I happen to have a pair of KC, so now I have more for breeding and a total duck flock of 8. I named her Bella. She was rather eager to join the waterfowl flock, but the other ducks weren't so sure. They have picked on her a bit and pushed her away from the food. The geese rush in and break up anything that looks like a fight. But my 2 drakes have showed her a couple "hey baby" moves. Bella is older than my whole flock. I'd be excited to see her lay an egg. None of my girls are laying yet.

My BO is still broody, so I moved her to the broody pen and placed 12 pheasant eggs under her. A friend was given several dozen eggs, and I hated to see them go to waste because he doesn't have room to incubate them all. I don't want pheasant, but I may either raise them to release to the wild or return them to my friend for him to sell.

Looking forward to having all of Saturday at home. I need to do so many little jobs. First will be to mow the thick grass. About could bale it. :D

Great photos, Becca.

I'm glad your cold is gone and you finally have some time to yourself.

Thanks for sharing those photos. I especially loved the root cellar. Reminds me of my grandmothers' cellar, lined with filled canning jars and bushel baskets of produce.
That is an amazing rug too. All that hard work women used to have to do, in order for their families to survive.
And here we are, trying to immitate them.

It is so good to have ALL the yard mowed and trimmed up at once. Birds enjoyed some grass clippings, but puppy was terrified of mower.

Picked 2 gallons of huge, juicy blackberries on Saturday morning. We canned 8 pints in light syrup, made a cobbler and still might have enough to do some jam tonight. I'm tempted to go back for more. The bushes on my property didn't do well due to late frost, but those up on my cousin's hill fared well.

Have 2 Red Star chicks hatching today from 3 test eggs that were sent with my duck eggs. Ducks due next Monday. I'm becoming overrun with chicks and need a new brooder setup.

Got a free bag of fresh corn today from a work friend!! :celebrate

Poor puppy! We used to have one that hated the mower and the vacuum cleaner. But QA's White Wyandotte, Pat Nixon, used to lead a group of The Ladies that would follow my dh on the lawn tractor - searching for the elusive grasshoppers! :gig

The wild blackberries up here have been disappointing this year and the ones at the farmer market last week were too expensive to purchase. Last year I made 5 blackberry pies with berries we foraged....

Wow! That is a wonderful blessing! :weee

Yes, Pat was leading the way yesterday with several of The Ladies trailing behind as I mowed!

The dog was barking up a storm last night around 11:30. I went out with flashlight to find a young coon in the trap. I had moved the trap in near the main coop because I was expecting the neighbor to mow his field and I planned to return the trap to its owner, but I had left it set. Now to dispatch it. :/

It was a surprise catch. I hadn't noticed any signs of critters around. Haven't even heard the fox calling at night.

I confess -- I have 30 feathering chicks in my basement garage. :hide That doesn't count the 4 peachicks and 2 poults. Or the 2 older naked necks. Or the 2 new Red Star hatchlings. Not to mention incubating eggs. :duc I have 4 brooder areas going.

Last night I pulled my metal lawn trailer that is something like 3 x 4 in the house garage. The sides are around 18 inches high. I covered the bottom with bedding pellets and put 2 house window screens across the top. 30 chicks fit in there pretty well. :D

The brabanter chicks are cute. Three have distinct tops. I guess I should be looking for mohawks if I plan to breed, but I don't really want breeders, just some conversational additions to my main flock. But I can't tell boy from girl as none of them have any real sign of comb yet and the comb area is black. Interesting. They are only 3 weeks old, though.

I mentioned I love the Partridge Rocks after seeing Kel's Rachel in person. Well, I happened on a short Ebay auction for a dozen eggs and snatched them up yesterday. :celebrate This will have to be my last hatch for the year, or I'm going to be moving chicks into my bedroom for winter. :th

Found someone on BYC to test my BR turkey eggs, so I can stop throwing them into the incubator. They just seem too "valuable" to eat!

Went to chiropractor after work yesterday and ate at Cracker Barrel during a storm. Did get a little done on the book, but it isn't finished. :hu
