Rain, rain, rain. I'm afraid the storms may have stripped the blackberry bushes, but I hope to try picking tomorrow night. Unfortunately, because of rain, I'll probably have to walk to the top of the hill instead of driving my SUV. :(

Haven't been able to get into the garden, but my mother did up 6 pints of beans she had picked. Today she hopes to go buy corn, so I guess tonight we'll be parboiling, cutting, and bagging corn for the freezer. Aly, want to come learn?

Decided borrowing my neighbor's coon trap for a month was long enough. I bought my own trap yesterday. Seems like I need to keep one set all the time.

Have a male duck that is limping. I haven't handled him yet, put I don't see any obvious injury. I hope it is just a sprain or the like that will heal on its own.

My mother is sick with the cold I had, though she is starting to get better. She had to postpone the shot she was getting in her hip for joint issues.

Made yogurt cheese before my KS trip and found it in the frig yesterday. It defiantly doesn't last a month (or even 3 weeks). There was a complete science project growing on it. :sick

Forgot to mention I had my first no shell egg. Found it splatted under the roost in the main coop. Glad I'd seen pictures on BYC to know what to expect. :sick I've allowed my young Production Reds to run in with the main flock, so I think one of them may have dropped it. Found a very small pullet egg in the nest yesterday. Wasn't sure they would be laying yet, though I think they are 16 weeks old.

AH HA!!!!!!!!!! YOU'RE to blame!!!!!! :smack I've been sick all week...started feeling a cold coming on early Monday morning........Hmmm must have caught that from YOU!!!!!! :gig

I can barely swallow, have a bad sinus pressure causing a headache, and I'm now sipping on hot honey and lemon tea.

Someone just brought me a HUGE zucchini. Guess I'll be making lots of zucchini jam. :love

Last night mom and I put up 5 dozen ears of corn. Made 25 bags (about 3 servings each) for the freezer. We still have a dozen left to work with.

I wasn't sure how heavily this farmer sprays his fields, but we found quite a few worms for the chickens, so it must be pretty good corn, right?

Starting to get regular pullet eggs. They are so cute.

Still can't believe Kel is moving here. Few people make a point to move to our rural county unless it is for a vacation home at the lake. We don't have a great job market, yet I don't hear of huge job losses like in many other areas of the country. Praying this will be a blessed move for Kel and DH. I know I'll love having another SS member nearby. We'll have to host the SS gathering here. :D

Weekends go by so fast!

Book is finally done. Another one due in December.

Saturday, I walked into the duck pen and noticed the puppy outside the pen with something. That something turned out to be one of my GL Wyandotte hens. She must have flown over the fence (my best guess). Puppy had her down by the neck. She tried to get away and puppy grabbed her wing. I got there after having to run around the whole garden and scooped up the hen. Puppy got a one-handed beating. The hen was only wet on the neck and wing. I don't know if the pup was just keeping her from getting away, playing with her, or practicing for a kill. :he I threatened to throw her in with my roo -- and I still might!

Treated my duck again. The knot on his foot grew, but I couldn't get any puss or anything out of it. Tried to isolate him in a makeshift pen within the duck pen, but he got out. I can only catch him with a net.

Made a batch of blackberry jam and one of zucchini jam. Also baked some zucchini brownies. Picked more green beans and got my first red Roma tomato. Pulled some nice beets too.

Borrowed my cousin's truck Saturday and got materials to make a temporary hoop house for feathered chicks. Planning toward selling all my extras at a swap October 16-17.

Neighbor stopped last evening around 8 to tell me she just saw a coyote in the hayfield across from my place take off with a groundhog. I haven't seen or heard the coyotes all summer. Wasn't a nice thought to know they are so close.

Peacocks are getting their little top knots. The yellow peachick is growing slower, though. It has some darkening in the wing feathers. I need to get a picture and post it on BYC to help identify it.

Put 7 pekin duck eggs in the hatcher. Plan is for my neighbor to take 4. One hatched last night around 11:30, but I didn't even see a pip on the others before I left home today.

Zucchini jam huh? Is it sweet? I have never heard of it but I guess when you are over run with zukes there is no end to the recipe adventures!

We have a lot of coyotes around here. We have not had any problems but I know it is only a matter of time. I did find a beheaded bunny right by my chickens coop a week or two ago...that was creepy. I hope they don't venture onto your property!
