Becca, your place is beautiful! So very green and level...looks like you could have chickens, sheep, cow, etc. on there! :D

Very pretty! :)

Thanks, Bee. I have the animal coops on the flattest area of yard that isn't too close to the road. The most flat land I have is right along the road. The hill behind the house would do well for a small pasture for sheep, but I really don't have what it takes to get into that--even though your two are adorable.

I'm not pleased with the pictures I have of my broody. She won't let me get close while everyone is out pecking in the yard. Here she is with one probably around the second day of hatching.

This is the outdoor dog crate coop.

This bonus picture is my BA wearing her saddle. Both hens have adjusted well to wearing them. I bought 4 from lovemychix on BYC. They are very nice.

Watered the garden last night. Praying for rain.

What repels rabbits? I'm losing tomato plants.

ETA: Looks like a lot of the wild blackberries got hit in a late hard frost we had at the end of May. I've gotten good harvests the last 2 years, so I guess an off year is to be expected now and then. But I really wanted to make blackberry jam again.

CAT! My cat eats a young rabbit each day, whole...leaves only a little bit if bowels. Other than that, I would say a good fence that they could not dig under.

I'm finding all my animals really, really HATE Citronella oil and will avoid it at all costs! Could try some of that on rags. I've even seen a citronella tablet to place in your garden for garden pests.

My cats have killed moles, chipmunks, and birds, but I have yet to see evidence of them getting any bunnies or mice. :/

Citronella is a good idea.

Becca, what is the saddle for?? Oh, and the babies are really cute. :D

edited to say.....Ok, I did a little search and saw why people are using these. I have a hen with a bare spot as well. I was not sure if it was my roo or the girls. I think I may have a pecking order issue. 1 roo to 16 girls. Any suggestions?

That would be because my rooster particularly loves my two Black Australorps to the point that they have virtually no feathers left on their backs. I'm afraid his spurs are going to cut into my girls. I did remove my rooster for about a week, but I didn't have a good place to hold him, and I sort of felt bad for him. He is a good guy who guards the flock well, and he finds treats in the yard and calls the girls to them. And he has produced some lovely offspring. So, I may move my most tattered girls out of his coop, if I ever sell my guinea and free up their pen.

Becca, we've had good results using bags of human or dog hair. Believe it or not. You can ask the local barber or stylist for a couple of pans, or save your own family's if thats too gross. Put it out around the garden in mesh bags like oranges & the like come in. Also, you can plant a thick edging of clovers or other greens they like. They stop & get what they want from the border and don't mess with your plants as much.

Becca, how much were the saddles and how are they constructed?

I never thought I would be asking this, but I have a few dumb blonde Buffs who can't say no and are showing quite a bit of skin. I am now offering myself up for ridicule when I say that I would consider chicken saddles long about now! :p
