Oh Bee....she sounds very close! I DO hope you remember to get pictures of the whole process...that is IF she lets you be there!
I tell ya what...my sheep will breed this fall...and lamb in the spring...you want a registered Shetland? Of course, there are no guarantees...this will be Sonny Boys first breeding..and for the girls as well. But...If I dont sell them, we are putting them in the freezer. I do want at least ONE for the freezer...but hopeing both girls get preggers. And, your not THAT far... ;) Maybe your sis will have piggies around that time? I DO still want to get a few of them for breeding...when I can. I have 3 acres of woods..with grass..I want to put them in. I think they would do just fine out there.
Anyways....charge up that camera...she should be going soon!

Bee, you just gotta do some more research on the benefits of raw! About 90% of people who cannot tolerate dairy can tolerate raw milk and raw milk products. And raw milk has many health benefits that pasteurized dairy does NOT.

Maybe you, like me, will end up teaching this! I did a class on fats and weight management on Monday, boy, were they glad to drop the skim milk! Did you know that pigs fed skim milk will gain weight, but pigs fed whole raw milk won't??

Can't wait for the calf, hope it's a heifer....oh, is that what you want? Sounds like she's gonna calve soon!

Yep, free. We only had raw milk when we were homesteading as I was growing up and it was good. I know the benefits of raw milk but was never interested enough in pursuing it during my kids growing up years.....my folks were hitting vegetarianism then and I kind of leaned in that direction. When we stopped doing dairy and processed foods, added sugars, etc. our health all did a 360 degree turn and we never looked back.

Now, however, I intend to imbibe in a little of Blossom's bounty when needed so I can forego buying soy milk for things like cereal~which is a rare thing but we do eat wheat flakes on occasion. Or for making some recipes that I never make because I never wanted to use store bought milk for them. My little Mennonite lady gave me a recipe for corn bread the other day, along with some home ground cornmeal, that calls for using milk.

Of course, I still drink buttermilk when I'm hormonal and craving! :D So, I will definitely be making some buttermilk and I've had several requests for cottage cheese and butter. Funny how excited people got when they saw I got a milk cow....makes me wonder why they don't just get their own milk cow.

I know, I know....too much like work! :p

This morning the poor girl is swollen and floppy....drinking water like crazy the last couple of days and still eating, eating, eating. When the nose is in grass, I'm happy!

Still waiting....... :fl

Yes ... you non dairy folks get to have the cow - while we gallon a day PLUS cheese, yogurt, cottage cheese for TWO people - people have no cow. :hit

Jealous am I! :drool

Boy would I ever have one too - I just can't quite get the city to understand why I need a mini - (like a Dexter) in my garage!

Keep up the watch.

HAHAHA I could sooooo see the new argument on that one!! "We can't allow people in town to have chickens, because next thing ya know, they'll want COWS!"

I guess it is a natural progression after all.

Funny thing is our town's history is FULL of folks with cows in their garage.

I guess not that many years ago (1900) they had a grazing service to which people around her subscribed. The cow herd actually came to your house and picked up your cow then they drove them to a certain park in town for grazing all day then drove them home for milking at night! Can you believe such things?

I read about it in an old copy of our county newspaper!

Where did I just read about them grazing pigs on the cities parks?

I think that would be something to see....city folks having cows on a grazing program in the city park! Of course, back then everyone also had a backyard garden on which to throw the wastes. Never work now, would it? I'd still love to see it........ :gig

Gals, I just picked up some grass clippings someone had set out for me about a week ago....all sealed up in black plastic and heated up in the sun....for a week. :/ Guess what? Pure cow manure, except smells much, much worse and I can't get the smell off my hands!!!! :barnie I had never fermented grass clippings before, but this is some high smellin' stuff, I tell ya! :sick

NASTY!!! :p The garden is gonna love it! :D

There was an article I think from last year from Minneapolis that was about grazing goats right in the city, so the stuff still happens. :D

Here in the Seattle area they do!! Look in craigslist under the Seattle/Tacoma area in farm and garden and you will find several adds for renting goats!! They make like 100 bucks per goat per month min. 3 goats!! One company is called "City Goats".
