This is so interesting to me. Three months ago I would not have cared one bit about hair vs wool or goat vs. sheep etc. I have learned soo much!

I still can't get over how much your mama cow has changed!! How long have you had her? OMG! Again, she looks awesome!! Kudos to your care giving abilities. I really thought it would take longer to see results like that. She looks like a beauty queen!!
I got her on Mother's Day, May 10th. She calved on May 25th. She has been with us a month and had a calf. She only received 2 cups of sweet feed twice a day, a week of extra raw eggs mixed in with the morning ration right after calving.

She had Basic H to her water when she arrived here, for deworming. She has had ACV in her water biweekly and has been groomed most every night.

She also has had some knee high pasture of mixed grasses on which to munch.

Amazing what a little TLC can do for a cow, isn't it? :)

Were the tags just for numbering..?

Some types of tags are illegal to remove, such as Scrappies tags I believe.
I would keep the parts you cut off just in case.

blossum is looking a lot better :)
They were numbering tags. I'm sure he would have told me if they were more important than that. I don't plan to be sending these gals to the market anytime too soon, so tags aren't needed here. I am getting them their own little collars and sheep bells, though.

What is Basic H?
Its an all-natural soap sold by the Shaklee Co. Its been around for ages and farmers have been using it for ages for deworming, although its never been advertised for this use. It acts as a surfactant which dissolves the protective oils on the worm's skin, allowing the digestive juices to kill them.

It is very concentrated and requires very little for effect. I think a person could use just about any soap for this, but this one is supposed to be made from soy plant proteins. Joel Salatin uses it, so I kind of wanted to try it and duplicate his success, if I could.

You really can't overdose and its very concentrate. I just put a squirt in a watering bucket and pour out some for each animal's watering buckets.

I haven't dosed the lambs yet, as he said he just wormed them, but I well probably do so soon, just because. If you put too much, it makes the water taste bitter and they won't like to drink it, so go easy.

Salatin claims it really glosses out a poorly animal, as it was originally used for fattening turkeys and cattle in England, before it was used as a soap. He also says his cattle eat more when they have this in their water.....go figure! :hu

I'm also going to start offering sea kelp and coarse salt free choice and see how this helps in their general health.

Bee, you can always milk her later, when the calf (calves) is (are) weaned. You might not get as much, but you still have the option, if you want to. All is not lost!

I haven't purchased any Shaklee products in ages. However, I used to get them from a woman at work, who was a representative. You may want to contact the 800 number on Shaklee's website and see if they can tell you of a distributor/consultant in your area.
