We are praying the very same thing. Never fear, all of this has happened in just this way for some grand reason.....I can make no other sense from it all than that it all fits into God's plan somehow and we are merely a piece of the puzzle.
The moon is so very beautiful tonight, is it not? I simply LOVE seeing that big ol' spotlight come popping over the mountain. It seems like everything gets very still on nights like this.....so very quiet and sylvan.

I am so excited about the topbar hive plans involving a plastic barrel! I can't believe it's been there all this time and I've been oblivious. I am definitely getting bees this year~two hives!
I have been kind of weirded out by all the extreme info involved with beekeeping that one reads about. It's daunting and a little overwhelming to think about spending all that money, boning up on all the lingo, worrying about all the parasites and diseases.....and then it kind of hit me....
...It's like all the newbies on BYC! They are all so worried about raising chickens just from reading all the technical crap, the diseases and "a coon ate my chickens" threads that they don't realize that you will never learn anything unless you just get in there, roll up your sleeves and take the plunge. Get some chickens and muddle through it all. Have some losses, or don't, feed something and see how they do, then change if it doesn't do well with them, see how your equipment does or doesn't stand up to the test of time, etc.
So, I'm going to build my own hives, throw some bees in there and watch what happens! Trial and error, just like the rest of my life. Learn by doing and try to keep the cost down.
I'd like very much to read up on catching swarms, register with the local extension office to do this and start out my life with bees with some wild bees. It seems they would be more hardy and parasite/disease resistant, if not as docile as domestic bees. Chances are I would be catching swarms from someone else's bee hives anyway, who knows?
Whatever the case, I am just going to take the plunge and see where it takes me. It seems to be more my style anyway!

I'm excited for you and can't wait to hear all about your bees! And, the topbar method (or any foundationless) will fit perfectly with your frugal lifestyle and low-key, "organic," treatment-free methods that you use for ALL your animals. Whoo-hooo!

It's called "The Barefoot Beekeeper"....which is certainly down my alley! It's all about organic, self-sustaining beekeeping using topbar hives. Has all anyone could ever want to know about the process and I'm thinking, if I can find it on Amazon, I will buy this book.

That's an awesome one. Some hard-core organic folks, like they don't even use smoke in their hives. For some reason, I can't get on any more--it crashes every time. Also, I discovered by mistake that one must not mention that site or its owner on the beemaster forum.

These here forums are a might protective of their members, huh? 
I just ordered the book on Amazon and I'm hoping it's the only book I need on beekeeping. It seems to be in line with want I want to do and all.
I can't wait to start this journey!
