Glad you are going to be blazing a trail for us. I was pretty sure the buckets/drums idea would work. You are good at finding a simple way to do stuff that most people over-complicate or throw money at.

Thanks! :) Comes from being poor, I think...... :D In the pic of the comb formation in the barrels, I thought it was so neat that the comb was in a perfect half-moon shape of the barrel!

How neat is that?

Was wondering what you all thought of using 2x2s for the top bars, for a wider comb base and more stability. The bars in the photos looked so small and flimsy on some of the TBH pics I saw on the BFBK site.

I'm thinking it would be a cool thing to put wheels on my TP hive/barrel.....wouldn't that make it easier to move, if needed?

Heck, I could start a bee revolution here....when folks see how portable and cheap a hive one can have. This could get REAL interesting! :D
Whoa there Bee. I learned this tidbit from watching River Cottage. You can move a bee hive two fee or two miles. Nothing in between.

Apparently bees fly using landmarks. If you move a bee hive ... say 15 feet all of the bees will fly back to where the hive used to bee and land on the ground. So if you want to move the hive 15 feet you need to move it 2 miles for a month then move it back to where you wanted it.

So probably no need for wheels on the hives. ;)

Thanks! I think I had read that somewhere but it slipped out my ears and fell to the floor...probably landed in the chicken poop somewheres! :p

I'll keep that in mind....definitely! Was sort of thinking about, if the hive was empty and I wanted to hose it out and clean it up for new occupants or such. BUT...if it were empty, would I need wheels to move it? Nope.

Dumb idea # 2,381,469 has now been canned! :thumbsup

But I TOTALLY agree with you about the free bees. That is why I was considering just making a top bar for the garden and leaving it "baited" and empty. Free bees seems the way to go for me.

Me too, FF. :)

Side note: Son #3 brought home some pork livers and hearts to add to my dog food meat collection. As soon as we get a deer or so, I am going to cook a huge pot or two of dog food concoction to can up for the hungry poochies.

:celebrate :weee :ya

I'm even saving egg shells, carrot and apple pulp and other veggie scraps to cook into the mix.

Bee you bee adventure sounds great. I can't wait to see what you come up with or how it all comes together.

I am just visualizing a little 30 gallon barrel with a spigot on it. With golden honey flowing from the tap. Ahhh wouldn't that be heaven. :drool

Wouldn't that be the coolest? Wouldn't everyone be doing it if it was that easy? :D I wish....... :fl

Lori, my mama is allergic also but seems to be most allergic to yellow jacket stings. She keeps an epi dose handy, just in case.

Ever have one of those days when, if you have to deal with just ONE more ignorant person, you will just fall over into a grand mal seizure???? :he :duc

Forget swine flu...the real pandemic is hypertrophy of the cerebellum!!!!! :barnie

Sometimes, folks, I would rather slide down a banister made of razor blades into a vat of alcohol than deal with one more..........well...there just isn't a word for one of those things!

I guess years and years of bottled rage tends to leak into the system now and again......sorry!
