Ok so how crazy is it that I've been telling DH how I want to learn how to drive a good draft team for field work and hauling?

You're right, the dreaming we do on here is wonderous! Its not only inspiring, and even makes me think about what I really need to get going!

So, what you're saying is, once your book is published, and you have said farm, all of us here on SS are invited to your place once or twice a year for a 'sowing/reaping' party??? :celebrate

Actually, I think it would be so cool if there were different SS farms across the USA that we could all go to, in our own region, to do just that. Then we could either journal about it here or designate a page for each region to post about what we did, and what we learned, plus pictures of all of us hanging out having fun! These farms, of course, would be run by one of us here on SS. :duc Is this too big of an idea? Crap, I think I just hijacked your thread! :he Sorry!
It's a great idea. Or for barn/house raising or other big crew type jobs that everybody could learn on.

All of this talk about draft hitches makes ME think. Why bother to buy your own horses?

A little farm near us hosts a horse plowing clinic/exhibition every Spring. People from all over bring their teams (and I think even pay a small entry fee) for the privilege of plowing this guy's fields for him. It is a fair like atmosphere, with a cook shack and lots of watchers. Most of the "clinic" part is done one on one, with older folks helping the newbies, but with a little more organization and planning ... I see GREAT possibilities! :D

Nothing like getting your work done by people paying YOU for the privilege. ;)

Guess what , Farm? This guy I'm buying my ram from has a couple of work horses and used to do those clinics all the time! How is that for convenience? I know he would love to mentor me in this type of an endeavor.

Pi-girl, you and I must have been sisters in a past life....

I've always wanted to do that and I want to do it with Morgan horses.....they have always been my favorite horse breed since I was little. You can work them, ride them...they are a very versatile breed.

Lori....ANYTIME YOU ARE READY....I AM THERE!!! :D I loved rafting and it would be mongo cool with a bunch of women friends. As a matter of fact, most of the people going rafting the day we did were women and women groups. Must be something about it, huh?

Our farmer neighbour has two enormous drafts, beautiful red roans... I'm not sure of breed but I think they're french. We couldn't figure out what they used them for for the longest time. They don't plow with them, they don't do much of anything with them until one day...

Mylie's head shot up, Luna starts flailing around her field like a loony toon and then I saw them..

Our neighbours use their two huge drafts for pulling a sleigh :) We're planning on training Mylie to drive and pull a sleigh in the winter for us. She's a hefty girl, Fresian/QH and getting up there in height now.

Lupin, I've always dreamed of offering winter sleigh rides on a farm.....how cool and romantic would that be? Especially moonlit ones. Heck, I'd be happy just to get to go on one..... :p

I've also wanted to have the kind of barn one could do weddings in and I could provide the fresh flowers or dried flowers, provide a team of horses for the getaway, a beautiful reception under a large pavillion. All the wedding dinner could be homegrown meats, veggies, fruits....very simple and old-fashioned.

I would certainly go on a sleigh ride with these horses :O Beautiful. I totally admire them from a distance...

I think this girl would look just fabulous with a small sleigh..

She looks small here, but she's got the body for hauling.

We have a huge bank barn, the loft if it were to be renovated would be great for weddings.

She is very, very beautiful......really makes me want horses even more. I love horses, always have. :( What is it about life that makes it turn and twist in the directions you never wanted to go? :idunno

I always wanted a farm and horses and never got them...well, I had a horse once but my dad made me get rid of him. It was a very sad day...but he was built like this horse in the pic and very beautiful also. :(

You have to be careful with your Morgans now days Bee. Some of the Morgan bloodlines have been bred to so resemble a gaited Saddlebred you would never recognize the old versatile horse of the past. :( If you get a Morgan be sure it is a Foundation Morgan bloodline Foundation Morgan Horse
