Lori, my NHs are doing wonderfully in the cold weather! I thought they might have problems because they are a single comb type, but no frost bite yet. As for eating? I haven't had one for eating yet, but Joel Salatin uses them for his laying and processes the older hens for sale for stewing hens, so they must taste okay in that department.

FF, correct again! Partridge Rocks are another heritage breed of very pretty, brown egg laying, heavy breed of chicken. The hens are a beautifully barred and speckled brown and the roos are vibrant red, green, black and purple. Very pretty birds all around and supposed to be good broodies.

Today I received my cartons from eggcartons.com!!! :celebrate I was getting desparate and was piling up eggs in containers in the fridge! And my fridge is very small, so this was getting out of hand....

I bought the cheaper option of paper cartons with misprinted logos on them. I turned out great because the company logo was very small and I can cover it with my own label. And they included the information that I would have put on my labels anyway. Except for the word "organic", all the rest of the label was true!

Grade A Large
Free Roaming Hens
Drug Free
Animal Friendly
One Dozen
Satisfaction Guaranteed

Also had the nutritional facts, refrigerator advisory, safe handling instructions.

Nice, sturdy, open-topped cartons for my golden brown nutritional treasures!!! Love, love, love it! :weee

250 cartons for $56(including S&H)

This weekend I will be calling all the finer hotels and B&Bs in the area and ask if they have a supplier of quality eggs. Have to make some money for all this work and investment I've put out! ;)

I've been quilting! LOL! Waiting for spring...this week I have been getting my spring cleaning out of the way so that when the temps get above freezing I can get outdoors without feeling guilty! I want to redo the coop, and paint it maybe a light yellow inside and out, add some white fencing and trim...make it look all cute and cosy. I just don't have much puter time these days, but often think of you all and keep you in my prayers. :hugs

Back in 2007 my first serious flock of chickens was 1/2 RIR and 1/2 Partridge Rocks. I was going to start my own breeding project, crossing RIR with PR's because the RIR's are excellent brown egg layers and PR's are supposed to be excellent broodies and mothers.

I didn't see this project through because of having my entire flock stolen from my coop in late 2007. I was left with 4 chickens, 3 of which were roosters.

Eggcartons.com are good people, and if you keep an eye on your e-mail, they frequently have free shipping - they're in my state and the saving is considerable, I can imagine you'd save a bundle! I love the open ones, too, I like the colors to show, they're so gorgeous!

Our Partridge Rock lays a brown egg that has a mauve tint to it. I can always tell when Rachel is laying! :gig She has never gone broody, but she lays 4 eggs a week, and is almost 3 years old. She has a great personality and is very calm and friendly, too.
