Well, this is the time of year that I check out the books from the library....you know the ones.....the gardening, livestock, greenhouse, DIY books. Once again I need to re-affirm that the plans I am drawing out in my special little notebook are on track.

Today I checked out a book on companion planting, another about sheep farming, the ABC and XYZ of Bee Culture, and a few others I wanted to peruse.

This year is winding down and the new one is a new opportunity to do things better, try new things, and refine the old ideas so that they work better.

Do any of you have any new projects that you are determined to get done this spring? I still have my greenhouse on the back burner but it is the next big project on the list. I want it in time to finish off my seedlings in it.

I'm also planning to build in some soil boxes in this greenhouse and keep some worms going in the soil. How does it sound to plant my lettuces right in the worm boxes? How much better can one get in the way of soil fertility than to have your food growing right on top of your worms? Any trimmed leaves and salad scraps could get replaced right under the mulch layer to feed the worms.

ETA: I got my tooth pulled and it was virtually painless! They used a new kind of local anesthetic and it was wonderful...and it worked!!! So....no more headaches, no more tooth pain....but, alas..no more big ol' handy molar to grind the food... :( Could be just the weight loss trick I've been waiting for.....

Hmmm... you've got me thinkin! I've never done worms yet but that might be a good way to go! Our garden project for the spring is to convert our in-ground garden to raised beds. We have really bad clay soil so thought we'd try the square foot gardening method. I'm hoping our yields will improve over last year and that when we get ready to sell our property, it will be a selling feature to have raised beds in place...

Glad you got that tooth taken care of :hugs

I have big plans this year.....;) first of all I plan to work more :thumbsup

And just as exciting is I plan to go ahead and put in at least two raised beds this year. Living without a decent sized garden is just no way to live for someone who loves to grow things! I am thinking about getting that started soon too!

I love hearing about all that you are up to Bee....you put a little sunshine in everything you do :)

TY, Dace! :)

Aw, man, lori...I am getting the greatest seed catalogs!!! I don't know where they have been all my life but I can tell right now that I will be spending a good part of the kid's inheritance (big joke here at my house  ) on seeds this year!

I haven't got that one but I'm sure I will....it seems like every other day a new one arrives and I devour it like a little kid going through the Christmas JC Penney catalog. :p

I have been reading and re-reading the Carrots Love Tomatoes book and have come to the conclusion that a garden needs to be down to a science....I've been so haphazard in my gardening.

So, I called up the Bat (my aunt passed away, so she is attending a funeral) and told her that we are going to study this book, measure out garden, plot it out....not just the garden, but a four season garden. I am going to finally get serious about growing food in a big way. Spring, summer, fall and winter will have something growing....cover crops, forage for the sheeples, nitrogen fixers and even veggies will be growing in row covers this winter.

Did you guys know that potatoes and bush beans will repel each other's main insect invaders? Did you also know that blue flax will repel the potato bug, make potatoes produce more and make them more flavorful? I did NOT know these things.....where have I been all these years?

I am definitely buying this book! :thumbsup

Have to work tomorrow, so if I don't get to be on here.....all of you wonderful folks have a safe and happy New Year! :frow
