Avast is a good free antivirus.

I began getting simple popups, then in only days they progressed to porn ad popups, cascading non stop, which I found disgusting.
My Norton Antivirus let them in. No idea where they came from; my computer, visited no porn or geneological sites like ancestry. I switched from Internet Explorer to Firefox and haven't had any problems since.
I figured if it developed the same that I would move to Opera browser.
Just including this info in case yours is unresolved and progressive.

My husband is sysadmin for a secure server for the gov't (classified stuff), so presumably knows something about computer security, and he has Avast on our home computer so I would think it is probably pretty decent.

Another vote for Avast.

I've been using it for years, and it is great. You do have to re-register every now and then (seems like it's every year, but I don't remember). It will automatically download the latest updates to the virus definitions and can be set to various levels of security. Great software.

thank you so much.

I don't know much about computers, so when my friend told me about foxfire, I was like.... HUH? :idunno

do ya'll know anything about it and how do I go from using IE to foxfire?

I'll try Avast and see how that goes

http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/switch.html

Tells you how to switch. You can always customize further at any time.
I didn't lose anything important when I switched, just the ads.
You can elect to take Adblock which prevents loads of ads- I don't see banners or google side ads unless I allow.

I think I recall that Reinbeau has Firefox, too.

welp, it won't let me download Avast or spybot.

every time I go to either site (via google) it sends me to the same Xtech site.

I'm screwed!

nope, every time I click on it it goes to "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage"

I went to MIL's house and got a copy of Norton 2010. It has 3 downloads on the disc and she had already used 2, so she let us use the last one. Even that won't connect to the internet. Every time it trys to activate, it says it can't connect to the internet.

Duh, I'm connected now..... I just don't know what to do
