-12 is way to cold to let the fire go out. Your house must be better insulated than mine though. It was 64 in the living/dining room 8' from the still warm and burning stove.
DH has been working on sealing and insulation projects for a few years. We didn't even have vapor barrier in most of the house when he started. :eek: He insulated the attic, the foundation, under the main floor joists, the long duct runs that lost hear. He sealed gaps and insulated around all the windows. It was a lot! Plastic over the windows and patio door makes a big difference too.

The room I slept in doesn't have a heat register and was comfortable. The old part of the house that was built in 1880s doesn't stay warm.

Our house is the same, built at the 1900. DH has also had to add insulation. When he re-did the front porch area they just had balled up newspaper in there ;) we still have a lot of work to do but it is coming along after 17 yrs.

Insulating a old house that's usually balloon construction is a hard job.
