Lots of coffee today! Kids are headed back to school, woke up to 2 inches of snow :(.

Laid railroad ties at the property yesterday as we were having a hill wash down onto the driveway. My back is protesting today but it felt so good to get some work done.
Would really help to get some ground cover planted on the banks, even grass would help a lot.

Yes, that is the next plan. There are some wild prairie grasses, but when we put in the driveway last year, they dug into the hill a bit to built up a couple spots and when they put in the culverts. My plans is some more prairie grasses, wild flowers, etc as we are trying to keep it as natural as can be.

@CrealCritter , nice looking steer, seems real quiet. You will not want to wait for fall of 2024 if you want T-bones... have to kill before 27 (?) months to be eligible and they will determine that by the teeth and growth... Cannot get the backbones or anything connected to the spinal column due to the mad cow disease...after that. I like to get rib eyes and NY strips and get the backbones for soup and dog bones and stuff... Besides he will be too big by then. You want him to finish out in the 1200 lb range and he should hit that before 2. If he weighs 425 now, then he ought to weigh 8 by the end of this years grass as what we call a long yearling... he ought to be well at the 1200+ lbs or more, by the end of grass in 2024. Too big and some places can't handle the size either for hanging.... I think you will be surprised at the growth of a breed that is more suited to "beef" than the belteds.....or dexters or crosses. But the cuts of meat are bigger too... It is in the finishing where you will see the difference of the flavor and texture of the meat.
I'll have to talk to my neighbor about this. I know he's taken some big ones into our local processor.

The new steer Brisket, has droopy neck skin and huge hooves. He's also quite vocal with his mooing. I just rang the bell, he was alone in the back of the pasture but came up with the others for a little sweet feed out of the feeding trough. He eat right along with the others. I think he's probably wondering where he's at and where's his herd. He's eating, so that's good. The rain cleaned him up well also He should settle in within the next few days. And I'm sure my wife will sweet talk him and have him eating animal crackers in no time 🙄

Low growing pasture grass heavy with lazy susans and daylilles would look good there. But then again I'm no fashion bug.

Finally! Brisket has determined our pasture is good to graze. He can't moo with a mouth full of grass. I don't know how many times he woke me up last night with his loud mooooo'ing but it was a good number of times. I had to take a nap this afternoon, I hardly got any sleep last night.

He was still walking the fence row and moo'ing till this afternoon. Then all of a sudden it got peacefully quiet, thankfully \o/. I went over to my neighbors and apologized for my new steer disturbing the peace. They just laughed and said he's got quite a bellow doesn't he, but he'll get over it. I'm blessed to have such great neighbors. My wife says he misses his momma, IDK... she might be right? All I know is he sure can put up a fuss. But he's eating and grazing, so that's a good sign.

If they "trailer weaned him" right off the cow, expect that he will carry on some for a few days. He has been totally displaced and everyone familiar is also gone...
The brahma in his background, the brangus make up, puts on the "leather" as we call the extra loose skin... It serves 2 purposes... to help cool them in hotter climates... and as insect deterrents... they can actually shake flies off easier than a closer skinned animal.... and they have a different chemistry makeup, that makes them actually less attractive to flies and such. They are actually a composite breed that is considered "stabilized"... 3/8 brahma and 5/8 angus... to get the best of both breeds.

The rules on the 27 month... maybe it is 30 months... is Federal.... private and USDA slaughter plants are required to follow it. You can get anything back in an over age animal except anything that has the backbone .... nothing that is part of the spinal column; no brains...
I happen to like the backbone as soup bones as they have alot of meat so try to kill anything before the age limit... I just looked it up and it is 30 months.... It does not affect any other parts of the cow.. just spinal cords, backbone, brains... and I think part of the intestines....

I studied a little before the purchase. Brangus is supposed to produce excellent meat for the reasons you mentioned. If I like him I have a source for yearling steers go forward which is nice. The Brangus bull he has is huge and so are the mature cows. He's a long and tall steer, with huge hooves.
