What do you want to know? I used to raise them a lot.
1. All they do is eat, poop, and sleep
2. They are messy (and ugly)
3. I could tolerate the mess in the 8 weeks it took to raise them to butchering size
4. I "had a guy" to process them for me in 25/50 count batches.
5. I found it easier if I got all females or all males in a batch for consistency in size
6. They (males moresso) are prone to leg breaks
7. Do not provide feed 24/7, more 12 on, 12 off
8. Finally.....good eatin!

First thing this morning, I could have sworn I heard the pasture bell ringing. So I looked out the bathroom window. All the cattle were lined up on the fence staring at the house. Brisket is the "wise guy" bell ringer. I seen him grab the string with his tongue and ring the bell as I watched them from the bathroom window ๐Ÿ˜‚

I walked outside and they mooed at me. I'm like what in the world... They are usually out in the pasture in the mornings. So I went up to the fence and seen they had eaten all the hay and with the pasture froze up, they obviously were hungry.

I went and got farm babe, put on my muck boots, chore coat, hat and gloves on and walked ever so slowly to not slip on the ice and started up the tractor. I speared a hay round and cut the netting off. Farm babe shook a long bamboo stick at the cattle to get them away from the gate and opened the gate. The cattle followed the hay round picking at it at as I pulled up to the top of hay hill. I had to get them away from the hay round so I could set it down and flip the hay ring over it.

I guess I'm a bad cowboy. Although I still would like to know what happened to all that hay the had yesterday afternoon ๐Ÿค” I seen a lot of deer prints on hay hill, will deer eat hay out of a hay ring?

A interesting start yet an enjoyable day today. I hope you had an enjoyable day also ๐Ÿ‘

Has anyone seen any better pricing on CCX chicks than +$3.00 plus free shipping a chick?

Deer will eat it here. I don't even have straw stubble left in the garden now as the deer ate it. There is green grass so I don't know why.

Mom said some of the people put out hay for the deer up where their cabin is. I know in bad winters up in the Umatilla National Forest that Fish and Game will drop hay for the deer and elk so they don't die.

That probably explains the sudden hay lose, thank you ๐Ÿ‘

I'll have to keep an eye on the hay ring. If deer are eating out of it, I can set a round inside the double stall lean-to. I don't think deer would go in there.

Yes sir, deer love the hay. What I think is great -- your bell ringer!! ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ‘ Got the "bringer" to bring it.  :clap
Maybe me putting that bell up on a pole and thinking I was training the cattle. Really turned out to be the cattle training me ๐Ÿ˜‚ "cattle school" who knew?

Meyer Hatchery here in Ohio is $3.28 per chick
Hoover has the CCX males for $3.31, females $3.16 and unsexed for 3.26 plus free shipping, starting in May.

Last ones I bought were a mix of hens and roos for $1.00 each out of a Rural King tub. Probably won't see those prices again :(
