Today I managed to forget both of my cell phones. I didn't realize it until I got to the farm. No cells, and no epipen! If it hadn't of been so late, I would have turned around, gone home and gotten them. But I figured, if no one could get a hold of me, it wasn't a big deal, and would be a whole lot quieter! I have a small, digital travel clock in the tack shed, so I took that w/me to work today so I could keep track of the time. Did more weeding of the fence line. Didn't work on the area where I had planned to, she wants to save that for the weekend person. Instead, she had me working on getting rid of thistles! I will be so glad when this job is done! Just 27 more days. (And, I am getting less hours now.)
When I got to the farm, I saw that KN was there, so I went down to see if she had tried to call for any reason. She hadn't, but she had some very sad news for me.
Several years ago, RU rescued a pit bull puppy. Originally, she had planned on trying to find a home for her, but she changed her mind, and instead kept her. Last weekend, she got sick, along w/another dog and a barn cat. It was so hot, we thought it was just the heat. The other dog pulled thru, but not the cat. But, the PB still wasn't doing good. I'm not sure why, but the vet did exploratory surgery on her, and found a massive tumor. There was nothing they could do, so they put her down. RU is really broke up about this. She has several other dogs, but this was one of her favorites. It's really hitting both her and her hubby hard. And, I'm going to miss her. She was such a neat dog. She always looked like she was smiling, and loved to run around and "chase" the turkey vultures if they flew overhead. RIP, Sophie, I'm going to miss you.
In other news, I got more of my field cleaned back up-in fact most of it. I have just one small section to finish tomorrow. Once that's done, I have some jimson weed to pull in CL's field, and in the riding arena. Then on Friday, I'll be able to mow. Next week during the week, I'll be working on weeding around the barn, and along the fence line. Come spring, I plan to get some white clover seed, and try to encourage that to grow along the fences.
Today was NOT a good day. I almost managed to leave the house when I wanted to, so I thought it was going to be good. I really didn't want to leave home when I did. I wanted to stay home and do some housework. (Someone, quick, get me a thermometer! I must be sick!) Plus, more often than not, I'm not hungry in the morning, so all I had for breakfast was 2 chocolate covered donuts. And, I didn't make anything for lunch. I planned on getting something later in the day.
I got to the farm, got everyone fed, hay put out, checked on my chickens, etc and decided to spend some time pulling weeds in front of my tack shed. I started to smell something really nasty, and couldn't figure out where it was coming from. Then, I had an idea, and dreading that I might be right, I grabbed some paper towels and went and checked on Penny's eggs. I was right, the smell was coming from there.
In order to get to her nest, I had to get down on my belly, and crawl. I took all of the eggs out of the nest. There were at least 2 that had either just plain broken or exploded. (If an egg explodes under a chicken, does it feel like they f arted?) The rest were covered w/goo, and a few were kind of stuck to the ground. I went and got some hay, put that down, then started wiping eggs and putting them back. I don't know if they'll survive or not, but I HAVE to try. Of course, now my hands really smell.
This meant I left for work later than I had planned to. But, it's not that big a deal. Normally, I get there between 7:30 and 8:00, and it was still B4 8:00, so I was fine. I got the horses fed, gave the one his beer, and did stalls. Then, I went in to change out of my jeans into shorts. (I don't like to clean stalls in my shorts, I end up w/a ton of shavings in my shoes!) I go to put my cell phones in my pocket, and realize I'm missing 1. I had the one for the pony ride business, but not my personal one. I looked both at work and at the farm, and I cannot find it. I rode my motorcycle today, so I also checked the roads to see if it may have fallen out of my pocket while I was riding. And, to top that off, while it had been ringing when I first started to look, it now goes straight to voice mail.
I've been getting done work between 11:00 and 11:30. So, that's what my day has been planned on. The boss wanted to work on cutting some low hanging branches. She just got a generator, and an electric chainsaw. We've used the chainsaw, it works well. But, she never tried the generator. Of course, we couldn't get it to start. And, I didn't get done until 12:00! That meant no lunch.
I got to the farm, and of course spent time looking for my phone. That meant I didn't have time to finish everything I wanted to get done. My field is all cleaned again. Plus, I got rid of the rest of the jimson weed. But, there was some growing in CL's field, as well as the riding arena. CL won't pull it, RU doesn't have time. And, I'm not about to mow it down. I've heard of people ending up in the ER after doing so. Off the top of my head, I can't remember why. I just remember that jimson weed is poisonous, so I pull it.
I didn't realize how late it was getting. But, it started to rain a bit, so I stopped. That's when I found out it was after 2:00! And, I had planned on leaving then. So, I stopped what I was doing, and went to take care of my chickens. Angel didn't lay anything today. Penny is back on her eggs, and I don't know if Roxi has now gotten broody, or was just laying an egg. She was sitting where she's been laying. If she's broody, I have a couple more eggs I can put under her, and if Angel lays an egg either later today or tomorrow early enough, I'd put that under her. That would give her a dozen.
I rode home in the rain. But, I think now that I'm home, it's stopped raining. I'm beat. I just want to go to sleep.
Once again, I found at least 1 exploded egg in Penny's nest. So, once again, I got down on my belly, put in some clean hay, and wiped off the eggs. It's kind of dark where the nest is, so I'm seriously thinking of trying to candle the eggs tomorrow, and seeing if any of them seem to be viable. If not, I'll start looking for day old chicks now and see if I can't trick her into thinking their hers. She's been on the nest for over a week now, and I think I read that you can fool them in that short a period of time.
I still can't find my cell. I have no idea where to even look! I looked every place I could think of. Plus, I mowed CL's field today. I walk thru it when I feed KN's horse in the morning, and the weeds were so tall I wouldn't have been able to see if it was in there. I figured even if I mowed over it, at least I'd know where it was, but no such luck. And, it was HOT out there! I feel like I'm melting.
When I was at work today, I kicked one of the horses out of his stall while I cleaned it. She has the vinyl covered stall chains to keep the horses out, and a screw eye by the door to hang them from when not in use. When I was done the stall, I removed the chain, and put it away. Normally, the horses will just stand there until I'm out of the way. Today, this guy decided he HAD to come in B4 I was done. He stepped on me-not on my toes, but right under the ankle bone! And, he's a big horse! You talk about pain. He learned real quick that you don't do that, then I hobbled into the house, and put ice on it. Nothing's broken, but it's swollen, black and blue and still hurts. But, at least I only have 5 more weeks of work left! On Monday, I'll be telling her that I'm quitting. It doesn't seem possible that in just a few weeks, I'll be done! I can hardly wait! :bun
Isn't that frustrating when you can't find something important like that? I remember when we were missing the key to the jeep.
Just think how excited you will be when it finally turns up.
My trick for finding things is....organize the space where you think you left it. Usually it turns up, because we tend to be a little disorganized. When I found the jeep key, I actually found a DIFFERENT one than the one we had recently lost.
It was in the back pocket of my jeans. It fell out, and I have no idea where. For all I know, it could have fallen out while I was riding my motorcycle. I had it when I left the house yesterday, but when I went to change into shorts after cleaning stalls, it wasn't there! I've looked every place I know I walked w/it in my pocket and found so sign of it, so I don't know what to do. It's not so much the phone that I care about-it's all the numbers in it! I'm about due for a new cell anyway, so I'll probably get one over the weekend, and hope that this one turns up. :/
