I'm so disappointed. There are only 2 eggs left in the nest, and I'm pretty sure that neither of them is any good. Plus, I think Penny has deserted the nest, can't say I blame her. I didn't see her on it at all today. Every time I saw her, she was w/the other girls. And, Roxi still hasn't gotten broody. So, tonight, I'm going to get my incubator all set up, then take the eggs tomorrow and place some in there. Then, if she continues to lay in there, I'll see if she will get broody. If not, I'm going to have to get a couple of pullets. And, I'd probably just take the chick started I have and mix it in w/what they have.

In other news, having the break over the weekend was the best thing I could have done for myself. It's still hot and humid out, but I feel better. Basically over the weekend, I got nothing done. And, I feel good. RU was away last week, so I wasn't able to clean my field every day, did it today. And, I'm noticing that every time I clean out Licky's stall, the old stuff is breaking up, and I'm getting more and more of it out of there. It's much easier than trying to do it myself!

I can't believe all the weeds that are coming up next to my hay shelter! After all, B4 I put it up, I pulled all of them. Well, there's a ton more little ones. So, I pulled some of them today.

The incubator is set up. The temp is set where it belongs, and I'll check it in the morning. Then, I'll check it when I get home, and if it's still where it belongs, I'll add the eggs. I'll check it B4 I leave for my doctor's appointments, and again when I get home. And, I plan on getting everyone else to keep an eye on it too. If I don't get any chicks now, I'll have to wait until next year. :(

Today was another hot day. I'm so tired of all this hot weather and am so looking forward to cooler days. I only worked for about 1.5 hours today. Good because of the heat, bad because of the pay. :/ So, I went to the farm.

KN has a ton of jimson weed in her field. She is working on pulling it. The field needs to be mowed. And, for those that may not know this, mowing jimson weed can be dangerous. I've heard of people ending up in the ER after mowing large sections of it. Not only that, but if the horses eat it after it's dried, they can still get poisoned. So, I helped her. It's not her fault she has all this, but the person who was in that field B4 her, couldn't be bothered to pull it. We got quite a bit pulled in the 2 hours we worked on it, but there's still more to go.

When I was done, I went up to my field. My plan was to just do what I had to do, then go home and do some housework. So, I started w/feeding Stormy, then bagging feed. Once that was done, I went ahead and cleaned my field. There's some poop in the parking area, and that was what I'd planned on working on next. But, the sky started to get real dark. The wind picked up. I could hear thunder off in a distance. So, I decided I'd leave that to last, and get everything else done.

I never finished tying down the tarp when I put up my hay shelter, so I got out a bale, gave it to the horses, then tied down the rest of the tarp. Plus, I tied the bottom of the tarp I'm using for a door.

I went in the chicken pen, and unfed the chickens. I don't leave their food out because of the rats. So, I put it out in the morning, then B4 I leave, I normally put it away. And, when I do this, I put out some scratch grains, corn, sunflower seeds or whatever. Angel had laid an egg, so I grabbed that. I noticed Roxi wasn't there. So, I went to check on her nest. She was on it. I don't know if she's broody, or was just laying an egg. I wanted to get some eggs from the nest to put in my incubator, so I tried to reach under her. All I got was pecked. In the meantime, I'm starting to now see some lightening. Where she has this nest is in a bunch of tall weeds. I tried to rig something up so the nest would stay dry, but didn't have the time. And, anything I tried to set up quick would have just meant the water would have probably poured into the nest, so I gave up. Right about that time, I see a streak of lightening. And, about 3 seconds later, there was a very loud clap of thunder. It spooked all of my horses. So, I got out of there!

I went in my tack shed, closed the one window that was opened, then looked for the cats. I could find Rerun, but not Cindy. I looked for her, and emptied the feed bowls for the farm cats so their food wouldn't get soaked, but no Cindy. So, I fed Rerun, and left.

I got home, and it seemed at first like the rain was going to miss us. Then all of a sudden, the sky just opened up and it poured! This was accompanied by thunder, lightening and wind. I didn't do the work I'd planned on because I was expecting to lose the electric at any time. And, I couldn't get my shower. It finally settled down to just plain rain, so I got my shower, then headed off to my chiropractor.

After that appointment, I went and picked up the stock tank I had found on CL last week, then headed to the allergist. From there, I went to the nature center for a bird walk. Next month, they go back to Saturday mornings. We had gone about 2/3 of the way we normally go. This brought us out to a dock. We stood on it for a bit, looking for birds flying over the lake, or perched near it. We did see a great blue heron in a tree. Then, we look at the sky. We decide to head back. We got sidetracked on the way back in by a tufted titmouse, then took another look at the sky. We made it back just in time! At least this storm wasn't as bad as the first. The rain finally slacked off enough for me to leave. And, it's now stopped. But, we needed the rain. It cooled things off at least for a bit. Tomorrow is supposed to be hot again, then it's supposed to cool off. I hope we're done w/the really hot weather.

The breeze is cool here. No idea the actual temp, but it feels and smells like autumn.

:fl Go away heat!

Ingestion, inhalation, or other forms of consumption of jimson weed can result in lethargy, depression, difficulty in breathing, blurred vision or blindness, and death.

Which is why I pull it when I see it. Mowing one or 2 probably wouldn't hurt you. But, when there's a lot of it, especially if you're on a riding mower, you can have a problem. Someone I know on another forum ended up in the ER after mowing it. She never knew what it was until then.

Some people actually smoke it to get "high". I'll just stick with my vodka, comrade. Thanks all the same!

I'd love to go on a nature walk with you. I'm always curious about the names of birds and plants and such and I'm not a good "identifier". I'm jealous of FF and BB getting to meet, I wish I could meet you "for real" DD.
