All of us being SS types know that if the "big one comes" and you had to make hard decisions, could you do it?

We talk a hard game about stocking toilet paper, but if times warrant, can you be hard, very hard?

Here is a scenario.....what would you do?

This is an awful scenario but one I thought would be interesting to discuss:

Let's say that we have a TSHTF situation and you have enough medical supplies and equipment for two people at the community triage unit you are assigned to...the following all enter at the same time. Who dies and who lives and why?

18 year old drug addict
65 yo doctor with heart disease
5 yo girl beautiful and otherwise healthy
30 yo prisoner (white collar)
26 yo obese housewife (4 kids)
40 yo police officer (father, husband)

GEE FC - When the heck did you have that dream? Thats a tough one. But I will go first and risk getting beat up.

Going under the assumption this is a end of world type disaster since you said if SHTF, and with the limited details of the type of injury each has I am assigning them all equal life threatening injuries.

Eliminating the drug addict and Dr as they are compromised health wise any way. Their chances are minimal.

My first choice would be the 5 yo girl. To me this is our future. Children recover quickly and she probably has the best chance.

The next choice is tough. I am torn between the housewife, police officer and white collar prisioner. The family status is a moot point as I am going under the assumption there is a real possibility family is no longer an issue since this is a SHTF situation.

Housewife is eliminated due to weight (I am going on extreme overweight issues) due to the length of time it would take her to heal. Plus the possobility of health issues that I can not see or have any way of finding out about at this time.

White collar prisioner - while young and otherwise healthy apparently does not have the moral ethics I think the new emerging population would need.

That leaves the police officer. Although a little older, still young enough to heal properly and many years to work hard in the rebuilding. With enough moral fiber to help quide. Plus weapon and fighting knowledge which will be needed.

Edited to add - I am not a medical professional. These are my thoughts and rationale only. And most of all this "is" make believe.

It will be interesting to see everyones thoughts and reasons with no throwing stones at anyone for their reasons for choosing who they chose to save.

I have to agree with 2dream on this one..........the 5 yo and the cop get the medical supplies they need. The Dr can help with knowledge as much and as long as he can, but in the end, he's toast.

Not playing this game.
It seems too much like punishing some for their lifestyle choices which are different from our own.

I personally find this type of thinking game disturbing because my DH is an organ transplant patient. There is a waiting list for organs. We have met many people awaiting transplant who may not measure to "someones" standards and are thankful that those who set up the transplant system elevated themselves beyond this type of thinking.

In these times of plenty one can be elevated.

In severe hard times, regular above the game thinking of normal life goes out the window.

just saying..........not a judgement

Why are the answers important to you?
Are you going to make adjustments to your life according to the majority response?

Well, the cop is def #1...but I am having trouble between the girl and the prisoner...only because the compassionate side of me would really want to let the girl go to the angels in the sky before something worse could happen to her...and the prisoner might be more useful. I know I'm going to get it for this one...but alot of things happen to little girls in the best of times...I can't imagine the worst. The prisoner, on the other hand would be able to take care of himslef...and who knows what he was in prison for...

I think a more useful question would be what can I do to assure that my community was as prepared as possible and how do I get enough training to be useful to anyone in a bad situation.

Not a good way to phrase a question- do I let the fat, old or criminal die first. Sheesh..............

Ugh...I just hope I never find myself in the situation of having to make such heart wrenching choices....but I would have to choose those who were most likely to help the group as a whole, not be more of a burden.

That's easy. Save the doctor. You'll need him later.

Get rid of the drug addict (you don't want DT on your hands) the child (you don't have time to raise a kid) and the housewife (you need someone who can drop it all and run and she has kids).

Depending on their other skills, save either the 30 year old prisoner or the cop.
