Ohiofarmgirl, you reminded me of the quote on my company's shirts:

I love that!!! i wish I could say that to FIL or his brother. Those sunflowers aren't going to make it that late, what you are not planting any sunflowers any more this year? Those tomatoes are too close, you'll never sell those, they are too short, too thin, too tall etc We hear that all the time!!!
They couldn't belive that we got chickens  wait til we get goats

I started with a flowerbox my father made for me when I was 8. But I inherited it from both sides of the family, the gardening/do-it-yourself/make it work somehow gene...

The wow factor will come. Wait til next year and your garden is producing. These things rarely happen overnight.

Wifezilla-
Pretty pond. You got the Wow factor. :thumbsup Those look like very happy ducks.

Dace-
Most fruit trees don't get big fast enough to worry about it. If you really want them - get dwarf size and grow them in pots for a year or two. Whiskey barrel planters are used for stuff like that.
A furniture dolly can slide under a planter and put it on a truck if you move.

after a while the nay-sayers will get over it...after they see your successes. we figured out there are several stages of SS denial:

1. dont quit your day job!
2. nothing you do will work! you dont have it in you just stop!
3. what? are you completely out of your mind?
4. say, these eggs/tomatoes/cheese is pretty darn good, probably a fluke tho
5. how's them eggs/maters/goats doin?
6. say, can i get some of them eggs/maters/milk-or-cheese?

and then the clincher which validates all the crappy comments:

7. will you come over and help me set up a hen house/garden/goat shed?

My MIL has made it very clear that she has no interest in even LOOKING at my chickens. :barnie never asks about them or even glances out the kitchen window to peek at them ...keep in mind that we live in a major city (burbs) and that I got chickens is about as crazy a notion as has ever come her way. It takes a lot of effort to show no interest what so ever in one of the craziest things your DIL has ever done

Dh asked me one time if I wanted to give her a few eggs....uh, NO!

OkieGirl did you say you have 5 4 x 16foot flower beds??? Do you really like flowers? I would gradually next spring replace some of those flowers with edibles. Perhaps one bed could be a permanent herb garden. One could be a bed of tomatoes surrounded by Marigolds. Add some heads of lettuce and other greens around the border of another.

Your all ready on your way!!! All the hard work is done. Just through down some seeds and water.

I always loved to mix in edibles with my flowers!

When I helped with a local garden install, our leader brought cedar fencing. He said that for raised planters that was the cheapest way to go. The boxes were very easy to assemble. Just loosen the earth below and fill with 1/2 compost & 1/2 top soil.

I may have said flower beds, but I meant raised bed... for veggies.

You're supposed to listen to what I mean, not what I say.

I have the veggies planned out for the spring. I got quite a few tomatoes out of the beds since we've been here. I also planted a fall green bean bed, and oh my gosh, they were so good!

I really wish I knew how to put pictures on here.
