What, you think I left?BarredBuff said:Hey Dooley!!
Having a dog with goats is a lifesaver! It's also a garden saver, an orchard saver, a time saver, a garbage saver, a car saver (goats love to jump on cars... ), a grain saver, a... You get the idea.FarmerDenise said:Now that I have 3 goats, I should look into teaching the dog to herd them. Unfortunately Blossom loves to head butt the dog and said dog is now afraid. I have gotta fix that. :hmm
What sort of a dog do you have? Some breeds, especially the ones that were bred for cattle, can get over fears like that pretty quickly. Dogs bred exclusively for sheep can be tougher in that respect. Sheep rarely turn to face dogs. Whereas goats and cattle will beat the crap out of a dog. If you want to teach your dog to herd, and she's having difficulty, you might want to start on some sheep or ducks. If she's gonna be working goats, I would suggest ducks. Ducks and goats move in similar ways, but the former are far less intimidating.
Herding with dogs takes work, especially in the early stages, but it's so much fun. With three goats, you could really handle them yourself, I'm guessing. But having a good herding dog gives so many options! Increasing livestock numbers gets far easier, and poultry-keeping is a breeze! And it doesn't have to be YOU chasing the loose goats in Mrs. Nextdoor's rosebushes on the hottest day of the year.
