Plaster of paris is like $5 for a quart (or more) sized container, at your local hardware store or walmart or wherever you like to shop. Look for it in the painting supplies aisle (used for patching plaster walls in old houses). You can also get it in art supply stores, but is usually costlier.

Five bucks' worth will set you up for LIFE.

If you have mortar mix, or pure portland cement, sitting around, you could *try* that... but I do not know whether they'd eat it. Really, get a little cheap tub o' dry plaster.

I do feel bad when I do that to the poor little ratties -- 'cept there just does not seem to be any really friendly warm fuzzy way of getting rid of them.

Good luck,

Pat

I know it's cheap, but I honestly only have a handfull of pennies until a week from tomorrow. Less than 50 cents. That's why I was wondering if spackle powder would work, because I have some.

I think you should try it...let us know if it works. What would it hurt? I wish you lived closer to the Seattle area, I think I'm going to get plaster of paris and peanut butter for the beasties that lurk in my woodshed.

Do you have a cat?

BTW, Beekissed, I still do not have an appetite since I read your post. :sick

I think I will give it a shot. Can't get worse !

I feel the same way about the rat tail story ! When my brother was a kid, he had a pet rat named Al Scruggs. He used to play with him all the time, outside the cage, and got in a lot of trouble. So, he dcided to play with it before my parents got up. It tried to run away from him and he grabbed it by the tip of the tail, and the tip came off, leaving the skeletonized bone or whatever it is. He caught the ailing rat and carried it in to mom, who was sleeping, and put the tail about an inch from her nose, as he was crying, and she woke up to a BIG fright !

So that's what I thought of !!!!

BTW, that brother now lives in Lacey, Washington. He will be here for a visit in two weeks, and I hope to show him where the rat carcass was buried.

As if being a "girl" is a bad thing. Harumph.

Okay, we have a situation. We must convene in The War Room. Why? This is not a mouse. It is......(drum roll)......Ratzilla. How do I know? The scat. And I dont' mean a vocal exercise either.

On my way to check the now laughable "trap" in the garage, I stopped in my office to turn on the computer, and there on the seat of my chair was a piece of poop twice to three times the size of what one would expect from a mere mouse. And....in the kitchen....the remains of my peanut butter sandwich were far distant from the plate on which it rested last night.

The "trap" in the garage? Undisturbed.

The Allied Forces (my SIL and I) will be holding a strategy session later today. The situation is Code Orange. Take no prisoners.
Great! Thanks alot! I thought I could get through the day without spurting water on my keyboard!!!!

She just gets better and better.......

The One-Bite is around $4-5 and last a very long time. Its not exactly a poison, but a blood thinner (Coumadin/Warfarin) and causes them to bleed internally......uncomfortable but not painful.
I still have parts of a brick in my cellar from two years ago and occasionally it shows fresh activity. Still lethal......

BTW....if your pet ingests poison, pour peroxide down his throat until he vomits. And vomit he will! He will be throwing up the shoes he chewed as a pup....its kind of sad to see but very effective for ridding the stomach of contents.

BBH, Sorry about your appetite! That will be $100 for the diet aid...... :D

SKR8PN, loved your story! :clap

Hey, I've heard of folks using pop. Says the rats/mice can't expel the gas and the build up kills them......worth a shot?

The other cheap thing I've often heard is to leave a big pile of cheap potato flakes (you know, like for instant mashed potatoes), the idea being that the rodent gorges on them and then drinks water and they swell in its tummy and it dies.

I have not the faintest notion whether it works. I'm not sure potato flakes are really any cheaper than plaster, either. But if you happen to have them I guess you could try, if the concept doesn't bother you.

Good luck,

Pat

I HAVE BEEN SHANGHAIED! BAMBOOZLED. HOISTED ON MY OWN PITTARD.

I have no idea what those things mean, I was going for drama.

My son-in-law, the pastor, just tooled over on his Vespa and set sticky traps all over the house. One snap trap. Three pads of poison. I cannot believe he has left me to deal with the expected carcass! I am going to have him paged in the middle of the night, if need be. That goofy smirk he gave me will come back to haunt him, mark my words.

He's not going to get away with this. No sireeee bob.
