Such a good dog, you are doing a great job training him.

Great pic from the Ren fest. I would love to have something like that around here.

If I was closer I would help with the birds. Oh that reminds me. I put my last 10 or so in the frezer yesterday. Two questions. Yellow ish skin and those dang dark feather things that have to be pulled. Or more like popped like a pimple. Sorry.

What the heck??? Did I do something wrong? Is it because the birds a older than the cornish x were at processing?

Oh, what do you package a whole turkey in???

Great pic, FF! Thanks for sharing your fun from the Ren Fest. Sage sounds like he is growing into a wonderful service dog. One of my friends here trains service dogs, so I understand how much time and work you must spend each day with Sage. Congratulations on great team effort!

I heard from my dd that the property where the Ren Fest is held at Planterville, TX (Houston area) was destroyed by fires and there won't be a Ren Fest there this year. :( I also heard there is a new Ren Fest in the Austin area.... I'm not sure if it will still be open when we get to Austin at the end of October; but if it is, we are hoping to spend a day there. :D

No idea on all of your questions, but when you buy fresh chicken you are supposed to look for yellow skin--it's the good fat :)

For a whole Turkey, can you use those gigantic zip-loc bags?

It sounds like he would benefit from learning the Long Down. Let me know if you need me to explain that.

Thanks you guys. Most of my birds were on the yellow side. I kept thinking I was water bathing them to long. :hide Go figure. They did eat a lot of whole grains toward the end. I was out of game bird crumble and mainly fed them 3 way, a corn, oat, barley mix I add wheat to. FF the birds dressed out nicely. Small ish breast but huge leg and thighs. Which is great for my family. I did not weigh any before butchering though. :hu Things were just a bit crazy. I do however have 20 more. :D So I will try to weigh some before and after. For the most part the birds I froze whole weighed about 4.5 lbs.

I managed to pick up two more bags of game bird for the remaining 20. Then I will be getting my load of organic grain from Azure today. So that's what they will finish on.

For my turkey I used two 2 gallon bags. One from each end then I put him in a trash bag. :hide I will need to get some larger bags for the others. I did buy some of those shrink wrap bags for my whole birds. I loved them. I will have to take a couple pics to show you.

Oh I know that one as well. We used to use it on our Husky so that we could get some peace occasionally!

At this point I am just glad he is staying for about 30 to 45 seconds. We will have to work up to longer times. He does "go lay down" on his little bed and stay there till I call him.
When a dog is not confident about staying somewhere without you, being told EXACTLY what he should be doing can sometimes help him "get over it." Don't be afraid to be especially bossy about laying down, and for a long time, since he already knows it, it should be simple enough to get him to just be "down" when you leave him somewhere without you. I would use the term "down" however and not "wait" which would be more for doing something like pause right before doing something, so you are coordinating timing with "wait" where as with down, he is supposed to forget about going anywhere and not watching for what he is to do next.

You'd think my dogs would be perfect with the training things I know, but it is a matter of how much discipline you dish out as to how "good" your dog is. My dog Dee Dee is really a well behaved dog because her personality DEMANDS that you get her respect and make her behave. But our two better-behaved dogs we have not "made" be good as much because they never bother us with bad behavior. And one my husband spoils is TERRIBLE, she would have to be totally be reprogrammed to be a CGC. Does Sage have his test?
