Ah, thanks @sumi. I'm ok and dad is getting more accustomed to the idea. He's a tough old bird so he'll do ok.
I'm taking the third day of my 'bereavement' time and DH and I are going to go to the movies in a little bit. We're going to see "A Quiet Place" and I'm excited - love horror movies!
Nothing much exciting happening on the farm - except - watching the garden grow! We're eating LOTS of tomatoes (yipppeeee!!) picking a few green beans, eggplants are blooming, okra is growing, peppers are producing and all the different types of winter squash are commandeering any space in the garden they can find. They are on the fence, over the fence, taking over the bean patch etc.... Only thing that's not doing great is the zucchini and summer squash. What's up with that? The zucchini plants look awesome, but most of the fruits are afflicted with blossom end rot. I keep adding calcium via diluted milk but while it's helping when I do it - it would need to be done daily I think to keep them producing. My yellow squash has a mosaic virus. Thinking about pulling them all up and starting over in a new area. But, the tomatoes are out-doing themselves! I've been dehydrating quite a few - they're great to just munch on or drop in a soup.
Conan is now living with the big bucks. I have separated all the baby bucks from their mamas and he was just too rough on them. I thought the big guys would settle him down some, but he harasses them as much as he did the little boys! Can you say testosterone overload?!
Hopefully, I can list the little guys on Craigslist in a day or so and move some out over the weekend? That would be nice! This kind of weather (HOT) makes me want about ZERO animals to take care of.
DH learned a hard lesson the other day with his quail. He had mentioned that they were going through all of their water every day and I suggested he might want to add some extra waterers to their pens. It got to 97 degrees the other day and when he went out there were empty waterers and several quail that had died. I kinda chewed on him a little bit and he felt horrible so I eased up. But, I told him that's not the kind of mistake that he can continue to make.
I've added extra waterers to the female pigs pen almost every day for the last week. (Boys are running loose with access to the pond) I've been out several times a day to check and to hose down the pigs since I've had a few days off combined with a weekend. They've got a nice big ol' bog made in their pen that I fill up with water every morning so they can roll around in it all day.
We're dry, dry, dry. We've had a chance of rain for a couple days now - but a big fat nothing wet fell from they sky.
Gotta get busy ... we've got a movie to get to!
