Ahhh....what awesome pics of your boy and that sweet horse!
Thanks FEM and sorry for hijacking your thread here! I just… oh, I just love how those two are with each other. Trying not to think too much about it, but I am so tempted to try and buy her. I cannot believe how relaxed she is with us, even me, I saw her twice and she just lied there while I sat and stroked her.

I love the pics - Hijacking is a-ok in my book. I actually enjoy it. It would be very cool if you were able to buy her. She seems like a real sweetie and so laid back!!

I am tempted to enquire, but my practical side is saying can we afford her, where are we keeping her, etc? I know there are horses and ponies all over the place here, from the field next to the football pitch to out there, but I'd be worried if I didn't know she was safe and secure somewhere, especially with winter coming.

Horses are SO expensive. I don't mean to buy. I mean to keep. I can totally convince you not to, lol! My husband calls them hay burners for a reason. And then farrier and vet bills...

Maybe we'll stick with fixing DD1's 4 wheeler after all lol!!

AaaaHaaa. The ole switcharoo tactics. Keep her happy with a battery charger, not a hay burner.

Minis USED to be very expensive. Now, unless you promote widely and show, etc., they are cheap. I had my time with them and we made money but, spent a lot to do so. it was fun. Most I ever paid was $15K for one but a yr later he had shown to a Natl Champ halter animal, at 15 yrs of age, and I got stud fees up the gazoo. He was only 27" at withers, tiny and very correct. Still sold him a few years later for $55K. Yeah, fun. We got out of them when DH got the big C.

So NOW -- today my beautiful, athletic, always a PITA coming 2 y/o doe tried to jump a fence. Goes over 4' like a deer, this one a little taller and a CP, so not forgiving. She caught her rear leg, snapped the bone and has a lovely compound fracture :ep:he:th. Yep, she was hobbling and I went to check, there it was bone & all looking at me. Not bleeding or such. I wrapped it in clean cloth & but vet wrap to hold it on--keep flies away, no more dirt/grass in it. Not a reset thing and she will have to be put down. :( Vet would be min $700 and that's because leg would have to be off about 3' above ankle. So, if she didn't get infected, etc., a 3 legged goat and huge bill. Can't justify that. Just can't1 So, asked around to find a hunter who would do the deed and help butcher....I'd give them most of the meat (I'd want a piece to try it -- haven't had goat in yrs.) 2 didn't want to shoot for "only" broken leg.:th How about, she isn't going to live with it??!! People butcher goats for meat all the time! Geesh. I have NEVER done from step one on an animal like this … really don't want to do the kill but -- I may be becoming EXTREMELY SS in a short while. I don't want to wait beyond tomorrow morning as I do not want to have her like this and risk ANY issues with the meat. I am hoping the neighbor behind me -- who deer hunts! -- will say yes when he gets home tonight. While I hate to lose her, I sure can't see SSS and wasting a good amount of meat.

If Baymule were here we'd be grilling by now!!

So sorry! I was lucky with the one broken leg I had on a goat - it wasn't compound and she healed.

If you do have to do the deed yourself just remember that a well-placed shot will be instant and painless. Draw an imaginary line in your mind from each eye to the opposite ear. Where the "X" would intersect is your target. Too low and you'll only get sinus cavity. Between the eyes is NOT where you aim.

This is advice I HATE giving... I'm not gonna sugar-coat it - it's hard! Go out with a purpose and don't hesitate....that just makes it harder. So dang sorry...

If we lived there we'd help you out! Sorry for the bad news, but I think I would make the same decision. Better than an all out loss. :(

@Mini Horses, because of the new restrictions on euthanasia agents, more large animal vets are becoming willing to euthanize by bullet. It is officially listed as a humane euthanasia method. If you can't find a hunter to help, it may be an option?
