I'm the one around here who brings in critters for the kids to check out.

It's actually cooled off around here, 78* at the moment. 88% humidity tho, yuck!
What's the brand of the root beer you're getting?

HOT. As many of you are I'm sure. It was 80 when I got up this morning. 80!!!! It's maybe a little less humid than yesterday. DH had all the doors and windows open with fans blowing cool air in when he got up at 5:30am. I got up and closed everything up. It's still pretty unbearable. I offered to take DS to the CT Science Center but he refused. Weirdo. I've got the bedroom a/c's on low. It has to be really hot for me to be willing to do that!
I have to plan DS's camp meals. He goes Sunday night. I was going to try to match them to the camp's menu for the week. Not going to work. Sunday dinner: cheese ravioli. Monday lunch grilled cheese sandwiches.... Sigh. oh well. It won't really bother him. I'll send a loaf of bread, frozen, and some additive free turkey meat and he can make his own sandwich. I'll do the planning today, the cooking later. No way I'm turning even my grill on today!

My broody duck is back on a new nest, under a large log from a tree DH cut down to make the goat pen. She came off this morning to eat and drink then went right back on. She spent the night there, I guess without incident. I hate leaving her out all night. I'm not sure what else to do though. The backyard is fenced but the local cats get in.

Surprisingly, we still have all nine chicks in spite of the two fine mousers (ratters!) we got last fall. The hen was quite protective, and now the chicks hang out with the flock. I saw one of the cats this morning (feral) so I know they are still around. She was in the woods where the chicks spend most of the day, OUTSIDE my fence!

If your duck is a good mama, she should scare off the average cat, right?

Whole Foods 365 brand. Or if I'm stuck locally I can buy Izze sodas at either Big Y (local grocery) or at our food co-op. He likes their birch beer. The WF brand stuff is more affordable, if I'm there!

A toad in the house is really NOT so bad.

I remember the worst spanking Grandma Nettie ever gave me.

I had my Shetland pony, Dapper, up flight of concrete steps and halfway into her living room. :gig

Oh, I have no doubts that a goat will end up inside sooner or later. Probably sooner!
As for the ducks, I'm going to just see what happens. That duck won't let me near her, even when I put down a fresh bucket of water so she'd have some close by. I got hissy and snapping of the bill. The cats that wander through don't pay any attention to the chickens or ducks normally so we may very well be okay. They're probably going to be in more danger from my own dogs if they wander into the Golden's path. We'll have to plan for that.
I don't even know what the incubation period for ducks is. I should probably look that up, huh?

28 days give or take a day :D
Thanks WZ! So she started sitting on them yesterday, making today officially day 1? It's been a while since we hatched chicks and we've never hatched ducks.
Going to be interesting to see what we get. My 2 drakes are a khaki campbell and a Blue Swedish. My ducks are a khaki campbell and a blue swedish and three blue swedish/runner duck mixes. But I'm counting my ducklings before they're hatched....

I feel you on the heat....supposed to be a chilly 94 degrees at 8pm, gonna get up to 104 today. My laundry has been drying in like....30 seconds outside.

Yeah, my son has an empty aquarium that we rotate his "finds" in for the spring/summer. We have a tree frog, a toad of some sort, and a turtle in there right now. We also did the caterpillar thing and released butterflies recently as well.

Boys are fun aren't they??? :D

We do still have our butterfly kit. We did that last summer and loved it! I'll plan that for the week between camps.
He did want a pet tree frog for a while. I couldn't see the point since he wants to hold and pet everything. And loses interest in things quickly. "Oh, you found Hoppy!" (who had been missing for several days at that point..... )
I'd have a turtle or tortoise but we don't have the appropriate amount of room to do it right and I won't compromise on that one. My dream home would have a critter room with lots of space for tortoises.
our heat index is due to peak at 97 degrees around 4pm. Blech. it is better than yesterday but that ain't sayin' much.
