No, coconut oil is pretty bland, actually. Coconut milk is more likely to make things taste like they are from a Thai restaurant. :) Coconut oil is solid at room temp. It is a saturated fat, but it has some good healing properties to it . . . look up some information about it and make up your own mind.

Well, if some of your co-workers are incapable of critical thinking, I guess who cares what they think. :p It is more interesting to talk with people who use their minds.

Coconut seems to be a love or hate food. People who hate coconut will notice it in their food. I mean the coconut oil, not just coconut. I have a friend who makes granola bars with coconut oil. I love them, but my kids won't touch them.

I have weird thing about coconut. I like the flavor, but not the texture, like coconut flakes. I don't usually like it in foods that should be savory. Thai food is extremely hit and miss. Sometimes I like it, sometimes I don't. My step-sister in-law, is from Laos, so that's similar to Thai food. I will just have to get some coconut oil and see for myself. I need it for soap making anyway, so that's no problem-o.

My midwife said that what ever I was doing before I was pregnant I could keep doing in moderation while I was pregnant. I never slowed down. (I even rode my horse, who was very old and gentle...still I know that was stupid.)
Then I was "stupid" right along with you.

Actually my MD said the same thing as your midwife. "Continue what I was used to". When I asked him specifically about the horses, he said no barrel racing, jumping or breaking colts - other than that I was good. He said only a VERY hard fall or a direct kick would harm the baby. They are pretty well protected inside of mom. I was even in horse shows at about 7 months pregnant!

I was also "doing heavy work" like I worked out with weights. I am pretty big 5'9", but I remember bench pressing 90 pounds 3 sets of 15 - three days a week - a 8 1/2 months pregnant. I paid the price alright. Big 8+ and 9 pound healthy babies, and easy and very low pain deliveries.

Those folks that sit on a cushion eating pickles and ice cream for 9 months will be sorry later.

Coconut oil in soap makes it nice and bubbly, but too much can be drying to your skin. Just a little side note.

Also cooking in coconut oil is bad for some as it contains LOTS of highly saturated fats.
The same reason it is good for soap making! :p

I'm glad I'm not alone on this one! :p I was told that more exercise (in moderation) made the delivery easier too. I am an active person and remained active during my pregnancy up until the very end. I did not suffer any terrible contractions (the water helps a lot!) nor morning sickness. I did fall asleep the minute I sat on the couch though, and that is not like me.

(I am only talking about normal pregnant women, you high riskers best take it easy.)

Henny where will you find coconut oil? Is it food grade? (I need to go back and re read.)

How far is Bellingham from say Issaquah?

That is a good point . . . make sure you buy food grade coconut oil if you want to try it. I don't know that all coconut oil is food grade. I'd only eat the stuff you buy in a grocery store, unless I ordered from somewhere on-line that assured me it was food grade.

Yes, if your diet is already high in saturated fats you might want to think twice about using coconut oil, but from what I have read some of the fats in the oil are good for you. I don't eat much animal fat, so I don't worry about it myself.

Saturated fats can be good for high temperature cooking and can give foods a long shelf life, at least the ones in coconut and palm oil. There is a plus side to saturated fats. They aren't equally bad. Animal saturated fats tend to be more harmful when cooked -- that includes butter.

Big brown horse -- Bellingham is about an hour and a half drive (on a good traffic day) from Issaquah. It is a nice trip and a lovely town, but you have to drive through Everett. The last time I did, it was a bit of a traffic headache. :/

I was just going to pick some up in the "natural" section of my grocery store. That's the only place I've ever seen it. Some people say that Walmart has it, but I don't shop there, so I can't say. (and honestly, am not going to go there to see, either)

I do eat red meat, but not all the time. I favor pork more. :drool I don't pay too much attention to exactly how much fat I eat, but I have been doing reading about cholesterol, and can't see that I eat too much of it. I basically don't eat any that comes from processed foods and such, since I make almost everything from scratch. There are so many strange conflicting bits of research out there, that I just figure, if I make it myself it can't be that bad, right?

I agree, HennyPenny. Funny how there is more heart disease now that there is so much processed food everywhere. Farmers used to eat eggs & bacon, smoke, drink, etc., etc. and they were healthier than most of us. OK, that is anecdotal evidence, but I think there is some truth to it. I think the more basic whole foods are healthier, without a doubt.
