I've learned more about nutrition from this site than I have in my whole life! I thought we lived a VERY nutritional lifestyle too. I stayed away from red meat, and ate very little meat (mainly because I don't know how to cook it well..I was raised in a vegetarian family) we have a basket full of fruit and veggies that we dig out of each day. I have almonds and walnuts tucked away for snacks etc. It seems like the probiotics (fresh made sauerkraut, sourdough breads, sprouted grains and other lacto fermented items) were omitted from my diet by ignorance. I am still learning too. Do either of you have the book Nourishing Traditions? Freemotion does and a lot of others too, I am going to order this on Monday. It explains the lacto fermentation process and all of its benefits and the benefits of adding fat (EEEK!! :ep Say it isn't SO!!) back into our low fat diets.

Until then, I am going to enjoy a nice glass of fermented grapes!

Amos- That's where I get my Castille soap! And they're kinda sorta (okay not really) local, since they're in Oregon. If I ordered some online, I'd most likely get it there. I don't remember the price off the top of my head, for the one in my store, though. I was impressed by how well they packaged my order. Some places sell organic stuff, and say how eco-friendly they are, and send so much packaging waste it's ridiculous. They didn't and it made me happy.

I've been reading about how low-fat diets have not actually been proven to be more healthy. It's all about moderation. Some fat is actually good for us. Like how they're learning about the different kinds of cholesterol, and how not all is bad.

Can I borrow it when you are done reading it?

Don't forget yogurt in your list.

A nice glass of fermented grapes sounds good to me. :) Enjoy!

Packaging :barnie drives me nuts! Come on world!! I have a nice big ugly scar on my hand that I got trying to open a child's toy packaged like it was Fort Knox! I refuse to buy anything with obnoxious packaging...I'm with you HennyPenny on that one!

You know the low or no fat thing has been ingrained on my brain since I was a child...it is really hard to envision fat as being good...especially animal fat. It is so confusing to me, I can't wait to get my book!! From what I read about the book they encourage some fat intake from coconut oil, that is why I asked you where you get it. I'm getting myself ready to change up my diet.

The radio program (The People's Pharmacy on NPR) had the author on. From what I can remember (I'm bad with dates and names) the first heart attack happened in the 1920's. That is about when homemade food stuff started its journey to "a thing of the past". Please, anyone outthere correct me if I am wrong.

I hate excessive packaging. When you buy a lot of second hand items, you forget how much packaging brand new items come with. :p Definitely vote with your dollar.

Yes, I don't think low fat is the right idea either. I think right fat is better. I think too little saturated fat is probably bad too, because it seems to me that the body does require some saturated fats (I think in cell membranes?) and I don't know if the body can manufacture them or needs to eat them. I can't remember. I should look it up. In any case, I feel balance and moderation is best.

Thanks Big brown horse!!!!! :D

Here is an interesting read on fats. Take what you want from it. It certainly is not what most doctors would agree with.

I like Sally Fallon. Anyone who causes such anger and disdain from the establishment is okay in my book. Has anyone read anything discounting her? They spew bitter words, and all I see is that they don't like HER or her message, so they have these weird ramblings that make no sense. (One even contradicts itself)

I haven't had the chance to read her book, but someday I will. I like the point that animal fat intake is down, yet heart disease is soaring. Interesting, I don't hear that on the news everyday. But lots of money is banking on these "low fat" miracle foods. And look at the poor farmers producing good honest food. They're going under left and right.

I can see the pollen almost as thick as snow outside. I'm so happy I have no allergies.

Pant! Pant! Pant! DM and HP9 did I make a mistake on purchasing a house with no AC?? My St. Bernards are threatening to break up with me!! Is this uncharacteristicly hot for us ebbing into the month of June? Where did this sun come from! Everyone in TX warned me that I would never see the sun again! I had hoped they were right because the sun and I are not on speaking terms...yet. :tongue

I took a moment to watch the local news (now that I am single for the weekend I can do what I want to do) and MAN is it depressing!! (We are loosing our beluga whale in Tacoma, there is acid water in the sound, a man shot his parents on a cocaine binge...probably because he was hot!) I used to be a news junkie from CNN to Fox to BBC and all in between...I had to take a break after Obamma was elected or my blood pressure would be through the roof. I think I am going to put my head in the sand again!:barnie

Olive oil has tremendous benefits when cooking and it makes a nice skin nourishing soap as well!

The coconut oil that I get for soap is slightly different than that used for cooking. It is called 76 degree coconut oil, because it is solid at 75 degrees and below and looks like Crisco.

The olive oil for soap is different too (but does NOT have to be). I use pure olive oil for soap and extra virgin for cooking. The pure is like the third pressing of the olive and a lower grade but actually better for the soap.

The reason those farmers were healthy is a total lifestyle picture. None of their food was processed, it was as fresh as you could get! Their cooking and seasoning was simple. Beans and cornbread and whole grain bread were eaten often sometimes every meal - high fiber yes, but they ate it because it was CHEAP! Yes they ate bacon and fatty meats usually more in the cold months because fatty meats like beef and pork were just hung in the cold shed or smoked and cured (no refrigeration). They also worked extremely hard every day and worked outside and lived in drafty (read lots of fresh air) cold homes. I am sure it was very rare for a house to near the warmth in which we live and if they did it was only in a few rooms in the house. Most of the oldsters I have talked to slept in un-heated bedrooms back in the day! All of that fat was necessary in the diet. It provided body heat and energy to do the chores. Usually the beef, venison and pork ran out by Easter time, which is why we traditionally eat ham at that time of the year.

In summer there were many more vegetables and fruits to fill out the diet. Folks ate small animals in the summer (one meal wonders), like chicken, rabbit, fish and squirrel. These animals are much leaner meats. People kept cool any way they could and kept their milk etc cool by keeping them in a stream.

If we worked as hard, ate as well and lived very close to nature we too could be strong.
